Has anyone tested FreeTrack with the TrackIR-capable builds? It's essentially an open source implementation of the same type of head tracking trackir uses, but it's compatible with regular webcams. I'd assume it works, since it should work with just about anything trackir does, but I haven't set it up yet to try.

I watched a video on YouTube with a guy using this feature on what seemed to be the Beyond the Red Line demo. I assume it works.

I think FreeTrack works for any TrackIR capable game so by corollary, I would say FreeTrack would work with FS2 Open.

Before you can actually use it, you have to get a set of LED diodes and wire them up to work so FreeTrack has something to actually track.

i have access to freetrack's beta builds with support for track ir cameras. its almost better than the software that comes with the track ir. it can get glitchy sometimes though. the track ir comes with a c file you can add to your program so you can use their interface instead of the offitial interface for the track ir. pretty cool stuff.

As I said there's a video on YouTube with this feature working. The guy who made the video was playing the BtRL demo with the tables that enable the player to see the cockpits.

How do you know that the player wasn't using TrackIR instead of Freetrack?

Yeah I was just kind of ignoring those comments.  But it's a good point, I searched youtube for Freespace Track IR and got a couple videos, but nothing for Freespace Freetrack.  Same with BtRL Track IR and BtRL Freetrack.  No videos mention using Freetrack with any freespace mod that I can find.

there were also the nukemod cockpit demo videos i uploaded as well. but those used mouse emulation and some scripting, the latter railgun demo used track ir.

Well, I put together my thingie (LEDs, resistors, batteries, and cardboard), grabbed the DLL from here and plopped it in the FS2 directory. Very neat. I still have to play around with the deadzones and such, but it definitely works nicely for what I paid.

What webcam did you use for your set up? Is the tracking choppy or pretty smooth? I remember thinking about doing the poor man head tracking route with Freetrack but I didn't want to pay for a webcam that could be potentially crappy. Most webcams refresh at 30 Hz while TrackIR refreshes at 120. So it would be nice to hear how smooth this set up is.
