E-Mail to Good Old Games
I've sent this just a few seconds ago. You have no idea how ****ing ****ed I am at them at the moment. I had three friends who wanted to play the FS2 campaign in MP and they all gave up when they couldn't download the core files and FS2 started spewing out error messages like it's going out of style.

Well done GOG!

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
What's the problem exactly?? Isn't the webpage of theirs still in Beta? Beta means, not completely up to specs yet??

...you have utterly and completely missed the point of what GOG is about.  Seriously. Congratulations.

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
...who's acting like what now?

Seriously, Lua, I could tear that e-mail apart piece by piece.  Let's start with the big fallacy.  FS2 is extremely hard to find...legally.  You can toss torrent links around until you're blue in the face, but that doesn't change the fact that each and every one of them is completely illegal.  The only reason that Turey ever included the retail FS2 files in his Installer to begin with was precisely because the game is so rare; there's now a dedicated retail source for it again, and so Turey nixed the .isos.

Or maybe we'll try your line about "paying for the right to use the SCP's work."  I mean...what?  Fundamentally, the Source Code Project and its related MediaVP enhancements have always been intended, and will always be intended, as an updgrade to the existing retail FS2.  That's retail...as in purchased.  Stick that build and those VPs in a folder by themselves, and what are you going to be able to do with them?  Absolutely nothing.  The retail game is a requirement to play FS2_Open, and GOG is selling that selfsame retail game.

(And before anyone shouts "total conversion" at me, we both know that that's a completely separate topic.)

Good Old Games is doing this community a tremendous service by offering FS2 for sale once again, and this is how you respond.  Beautiful.  Just wonderful.

Good job, they'll probably see to it those torrents get shut down now.

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
And that would be just fine.  Even by the loosest definition of the term, FS2 isn't "abandonware," at least not anymore.

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
It would in theory be fine, unless you take into account that CDs can get broken/scratched and that GoG won't give you a freebie if you mail in a broken CD.

But I wasn't thinking of that at the time. I just said it to show that LuaPineapple's email would likely end up hurting him/us more than helping.

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
...and what are you doing with your FS2 CDs that puts them at any risk of getting mauled?  If your game needs reinstalling, you reinstall it, the CDs go back in the case, and they hibernate until the next time they're needed.  It's not some trial by fire to keep them in pristine condition. :p

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
Never point out torrents...that's a good way to get them shut down...

As much as I hate all legal-schmegal goody two shoes, that email was just nonsensical, Lua...if you want to get it illegally...do so quietly, so the rest of us that want to torrent it can too. =.= GOG isn't preventing you from torrenting the game,

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
I couldn't care less for most of that email. But saying "In effect you are charging people 6 to 10 dollars for what the SCP team has been... releasing for free." effectively makes any legal parties think that we've been distributing a commercial game for free. The SCP hasn't done such thing. They got the source code of the game engine, fiddled with it and released a new version. They haven't been distributing the whole game. Only the open-source engine.

And... "If a new comer to the SCP decides he/she wants to try it then they have to 'legally' pay YOU for the right to use THE SCP TEAM'S work." is also invalid. No one is paying GOG for FSO. They're paying them for FS2. FSO is still very much free and available from various sources without moral consequences.

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
You ****ing Moron.

The SCP has nothing to do with retail FS2.  The SCP has nothing to do with the Installer.  GOG is not charging for the SCP.  I don't even know where to start counting the number of errors you made.

I sincerely hope this thread is some sort of tasteless practical joke.  If not, you need to sign online immediately and find karajorma or me to see how you can fix this.

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
So this person has just pointed out a whole load of torrents, completely insulted people who are doing their best to help, has said the SCP is taking part in illegal activities and has basically stopped anyone from getting FS2 completely?

Wow. I couldn't do more damage even if I was trying.

Re: E-Mail to Good Old Games
With karajorma's input, I've emailed a letter to GOG in an attempt to smooth things over.

Karajorma noticed LuaPineapple on another forum posting internal developer screenshots of Diaspora, and announcing a release date.  So I'm beginning to suspect that his password got stolen.  It would make more sense than him arbitrarily deciding to burn all his bridges at once.

I suggest that all of you ensure that you have good passwords. :)

I don't know if mine is good.

It's: <telling people your password is fundamentally stupid>. Is that good enough?
