Sol in 2335 - State Colonization
Alright, so I was doing some thread digging, and this one http://www.hard-light.net/forums/index.php/topic,32301.0.html kinda perked my interest. Combined with some random reading on Wikipedia, my interest has spiked as to the state of colonization of the planets in the Solar System as of the time of FreeSpace 1. (FS2 will be an entirely new can of worms which I'm not going to open).

I'm most interested as of the state of Mars. As in, how is it colonized, if at all? Does it simply have some Arcadias ringed around it? Or are there involved surface colonies and possibly terraforming?

Probably a load of Domed habitats and underground structures; Like in Babylon 5.

Arcadias and the like probably orbit the planet as well...

Terraformed/Vasuformed planets? (yey, new word!)

Mars might be Terra 2, Arcadia stations around the gas giants to oversee gas mining operations, asteroid mining in the inner and outer asteroid belts, Pluto being re-classified as planet, the remnants of Vulcan being towed away from the sun and reshaped into a mobile base of operations...or maybe using large asteroids to become mobile field bases (might be how Bosch got the idea to camouflage the Iceni like an Asteroid). Who knows? Anything is possible; we do not know how far things have gone with the whole colonization business.

AFAIK the Terrans colonized only planets that are Earthlike, or like one. It is a rather interesting topic, though.I need to awaken my brains to get a good answer up other than this one (something more plausible than what I have uttered up thre, at least)

Yea, I'd think that Mars would either be partially terraformed, or people living in domed cities.

One of the FS2 planet bitmaps is a terraformed Mars. Maybe the GTA moved the entire planet out of Sol before the Lucifer's node collapsing explosion.

Strange comment for an INFA team member :wtf: :P

I guess there will be many structures on the surface and possibly underground. I'm not sure, however, if there will be some kind of terraforming

Maybe they created an exact copy of Mars and moved the new copy out of Sol...

Sorry...

Well, has there actually been any canon evidence to support that the PVN/GTA are able to terraform planets, or is it just fanon?

Wow. I guess it proves that Mars really does hate fanon with such a passion he will strike it down with a fury this world has never witnessed.

Re: Sol in 2335 - State Colonization
Back on topic: I'm quite sure that Mars and lots of moons have been colonized. It would be a shame to go to other star systems while leaving your own unexploited; Sol will always have that 'home' feeling to us Terrans. So in 2335, I think the Earth is overcrowded and Mars - being more suitable than the Moon - is being terraformed (which is a process taking centuries, if not millennia AFAIK).

Re: Sol in 2335 - State Colonization
It's a pretty logical fanon, IMO. Maybe they can't do what we intend with pure terraforming but they might do something similar.

I hard believe the planets colonized in TV space are ALL similar to either Earth or Vasuda Prime...

Re: Sol in 2335 - State Colonization
So how's life in Mars, Mars? And how are the cities like?

Anyway...

There's nothing said about Sol colonisation. Only outside of Sol, that there have been 12-14 or so successful colonisations outside Sol. But nothing said of Sol, so we can assume it was exploited well at that time?

The Moon, Mars and several satellites must have been colonized.

Well you asked. I didn't say it was illogical or even improbable. I think it's quite likely in the context of FS2 that non-terran planets are colonized, however, there's no real evidence to back it up. I suppose some of the planet backgrounds appear to have cities on them, but they might just be desert terran planets.

Re: Sol in 2335 - State Colonization
Well, we could technically start terraforming Mars right now if you really wanted to. Start bombarding it with CFCs and/or ammonia from asteroids/comets (providing buffer gas AND hydrogen), then bombard it with algal spores once the temperature rises.

At least that was how it was outlined.

Apparently, "terraforming technology" isn't really the limiting factor. It's the lack of dedication, funding, and a means of efficient rapid transport. Let's say, the fact that we have no subspace makes it impossible to import large quantities of materials from Jupiter.

I'm saying this because the bitmap I have for Mars is...exactly like it is today...
This means I'll probably have to shop in a few cities at the very least, or add some terraforming look.

Terraforming tech is pretty neat: we need to figure out how to get millions of tonnes of resources to actually do it. And yeah--without a subspace of sorts, we're in for a very hard time getting resources from somewhere completely inhospitable to somewhere we can make hospitable.

That'd be nice...INFA's Mars bitmap has no cities on the surface.. :(
