What the hell is with all the anime/manga adaptations that are in the live action pipline out of hollywood? SERIOUSLY?

Akira
Battle Angel
Robotech (Macross)
Cowboy Bebop
Voltron
Ghost in the Shell

and God knows what else.

Is that the only way North America is expected to ever experience this stuff? Stuffed into through some hollywood filter and spoonfed to the public because they themselves are too stupid to watch a cartoon because "cartoons are for kids?" It maybe wouldn't bother me if not for the fact that probably everything coming out is going to be redone to suit american audiences, like Akira set in New York *gag* instead of Tokyo. Because Americans, quite honesty, have the complete inability to tell a story about anyone but themselves when it comes to movies (a generalization to be sure, but true in so many examples).

WTF? :eek2:

They're really doing movies based on those anime?

Heck, if it's a big budget project made by a good director I'd be happy, but fat chances of that. Honestly, I always wanted to see a Macross movie.

but I do agree to you what often people automaticely classify anime as for kids. Why wouldn't they? All they've seen from anime is Pokemon and all other animated movies/cartoons are for kids mostly.
As far as USA being USA-centric. It's true mostly. But so are most anime's. Aren't most of them set in Japan?

Most are, but at least they acknowledge the presence of other nations.

I will never, ever forgive whoever made the film adaptation of 'Fists of the NorthStar', one of the greatest insults not only to Anime, but to film-making in general.

Sorry, I musta missed the memo on the mutilations adaptations of those animes.

Film adaptation of anime, imo, should be done by the Japanese, since the animes were Japanese to begin with. I highly, seriously, doubt that Hollywood will be able to do it well. Because some of those animes, iirc, have cultural references relevant to Japan itself, and I doubt your average American would be able to connect with those references.

By the way, they're doing a live-action Dragonball film, as well.

I think this is the real one: http://www.tudou.com/programs/view/CFiS_lxovc4

Well, at least it's not a 3 cent movie budget-wise.... effects and scenery look OK.
Plot and the story.....lol...well, it IS Dragonball. What did you expect?

i dont think id ever watch anime on a regular basis, it has come to be a massive cliche as far as im concerned, and i hate all the ****ing jpop they play. makes me want to stick my head in a wood chipper. then again some anime has been intresting, its something one must take in moderation for the sake of their own sanity.

that said they should make a book accurate anime version of the entire dune saga :D

Does it really matter?  If the adaptations royally suck (as some of them are sure to), then just ignore them.  They won't somehow destroy the original sources you already know and love.  And several of the projects you mention are such long-term, tenuous prospects, there's no guarantee that they'll ever enter production, much less be released, particularly with the economy the way it is right now.

well, think about how many anime are set in Tokyo (or some variation thereof) or Japan, it's perfectly natural for there to be ethnocentrism. and to be perfectly honest, if it is an attempt to translate the stories for an American audience, the idea behind translation is to make the experience of the story to be as close as possible for the target audience to what it was for the original, are Americans going to relate to a story set in Tokyo the same as Japanese would? or would Americans resonate to a story set in New York the same way Japanese would relate to a story set in Tokyo? but of course, the problem here is if you take it too far then you lose most of the story altogether, after all Americans aren't going to relate to a guy named Kaneda or Tetsuo the same way Japanese would either, but you can't exactly just rename them. it probably would have been best to leave the city unnamed.

I would be more worried that they would not be able to take the project seriously enough to give it proper respect and effort. the greater problem is these adaptions will most likely have almost nothing in common with the source material at all and only have the name and one or two totally disjointed plot elements and a WHOLE **** ton of other random crap added in. i.e. 'super mario brothers the movie'.

of the shows listed GITS is the only one I can see getting something aproching half way decent made for it.

What the hell is with all the American-bashing on the internet? SERIOUSLY?

Redone TV shows
When Bush was voted in (twice)
US education
US pop-culture

and God knows what else.

Is that the only way anyone not American on the internet is expected to ever think of Americans? Stuffed into through some random impulse-posts on obscure internet forums because they themselves are too stupid to not try to make insulting generalizations?  It maybe wouldn't bother me if not for the fact that probably everything coming out is going to be insulting to everyone who isn't the way they described, like the time every single American is called idiot an because 20% of the US voted for Bush *gag* instead of Kerry. Because these people who make these posts on the internet, quite honesty, have the complete inability to realize that what they're saying doesn't actually accurately represent all Americans and is insulting to some of them (a generalization to be sure, but true in so many examples).

Robotech is reasonably possible. Consider the quality of CGI mecha in Transformers.

On the other hand, GitS will probably stink because...well, it's GitS. The movie wasn't that great. (****, I would bet money it only got anywhere because the Major was damn near nude most of the time.) Cowboy Bebop can't be done justice in a cinematic format and will probably feel like Uwe Boll was directing. I don't know enough about Gunnm (Battle Angel to the rest of you) to make a solid judgement, but I read a couple of the manga once, so I think that's possible.

Voltron can only become an epic disaster.

Referencing that show automatically deducts 15 manliness points from your account. Spelling the name incorrectly, however, gives you five points back. You still lose 10 points, though.
