linux SCP work on ps3?
ok so... i got my hands on a shiny new ps3 a few days ago and i've been trollin the interwebs to get some solid info. It seems Fedora will work on the PS3 out of the box so I was curious to know if fs2 would run on it? i think itd be kinda cool to have a console running FS2 open =p

Not without a lot of work that no one is currently likely to invest any effort in.  It's currently only capable of being compiled for x86 hardware.

Re: linux SCP work on ps3?
hrmz... i wonder if i could get a mac os running on it... i'll do some research. From everything i see XP and Vista run as slow as my grand mother so i don't believe that would be an option

Edit:

ok so 5 minutes worth of google turned up that OSX wont work either.... bleh... well, i could try wine i suppose. Fedora 10 will be released tomorrow which is supposed to have better ps3 support so maybe I could get some where with that

Re: linux SCP work on ps3?
if you didnt know, PS3 doesnt use the same chip architecture as PC's. Its "Cell" processor is more or less a 8 core, heavily refined and somewhat optimised PowerPC chip. /sarcasm

as in, RISC processors, as opposed to general use processors from AMD & Intel.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cell_(microprocessor)

the most laughable thing about PS3 in my eyes is its absolutely laughable amount of RAM included. 256 MB? 256? for ****s sake, my old, crappy barely working PoS pc from '97 has that much ram...

[also note, as far as i know, no linux distro managed to unlock the full 8-core power of the PS3 yet. all of em use only 1 core.

Well now i did read some where that fedora and yellow dog (or w/e its called) were able to use all but 1 of the cores and it was locked by sony for some reason or another... i forget where i read that. In all seriousness, this was just something I was thinking about doing for kicks. Really what i need to do is get some extra HDD's and removable bays and run linux on them.

It wouldn't be as cool as you might think, since you would need to plug in keyboard at the very least to access all the important commands and it would be much easier to do that on a proper PC instead of fooling around with a console... getting it to work on a console would be a curiosity, and it's only value would be in the process of making it work...

Besides, even if FS2_Open works fine on Linux itself, you're gonna hit a tiny snag when you have no access to PS3's hardware 3D acceleration with your Fedora that you try to run FS2_Open on.

PS3 native operating system is, as far as I know, the only way to use the graphics of PS3. You might have better luck with Wine and FS1 retail (possibly FS2 retail as well) in software mode, as retarded as it sounds...

Re: linux SCP work on ps3?
There's always going to be a niche crowd around here who appreciates how awesome it would be to run FSO on something besides basic PC or Mac hardware.  Unfortunately that takes quite a bit of effort and the niche crowd is too small for any current coders to spend the effort.  Another coder would have to come in and do the work on their own to port it to other hardware like that.

Yeah you can.  How about 1.5TB for $140?  Better $/GB anyway.  Same with a buch of 1TB drives right now, the Spinpoint F1 is about $102 on pricewatch.

Wow, the prices are coming down enough to make a multi-teraquad system start to look feasible.

meh ive been ordering from zip zoom fly for years. their shipping rates are quite reasonable, less than most plus 90% of their stuff has free shipping on it and to up grade to 2 day shipping is fairly cheap as well. Besides that ive gotten to where Western Digital is the onry HDD brand i trust... anyone ever have a Quantum Fireball drive  :shaking: actually between them and sea gate ive had the best of luck plus I run a Raid 0 and i just can't justify having 2 TB of storage =p with the setup i'm gonna have i'll have 1 TB for Vista and 500gb for Linux
