Depends on the school you are attending and on your age. Up to college, it is easily done. In the University, not so any more. There are simply so many assignments that eat up all your time. After graduation, the training time decreases because most of the people start to have families by that time.

During University, I trained about 12 hours a week. After University, it peaked at 20 hours a week until body finally said stop (mind you, my day job is engineering and research, a typical 40 hours/week work). I was flabbergasted to hear that my weekly practice hours rivaled those by the professional sportsmen... yeah, so maybe that was a wee bit too much.

Like somebody already said, it is more like Sports, Social life and School. Pick any two. What I find in my working place is that researchers indeed tend to do some sports, but that is more stress-relieving sports than any kind of competing sports.
