OT- Can anyone figure this out?
Hey, my first OT!
This is a classic game called Earthsiege. It shared the mechwarrior genre and unfortunately died out. Since it's almost 10 years old its too hard to install with the knowledge that I have. Can anyone get this game to run properly? Please give it a shot. All those who read this and if your connection permits. (Its almost 11mb)

Ohh and this is not a warez (I know I must have spelled that wrong) It has become freeware to the best of my knowledge.

Here's the link:
The link doesn't want to work so if you're interested in aquiring a new game and helping a fellow fourmite go to this site

http://www.theunderdogs.org/

Search for Earthsiege and follow the links till you can download it.

thanks

I actually have this game; I remember buying it retail several years ago. That version, at least, works for me. What is the problem with your copy?

Some of the CD tracks are very good though; too bad they couldn't put those in as well. ;)

BTW they have some other games there that are definitely worth playing; I haven't seen the whole list, but get any of the following games if you can find them there. (these are the older games on my hard drive)

  • Beneath a Steel Sky - sci-fi adventure game; couldn't get this to work completely, but it looked very promising
  • Chex Quest 1/2/3 - the first one was actually included in a box of Chex cereal some time ago, with the other two available from a website; a Doom modification but with Chex stuff everywhere, cool game
  • Doom 1/2 - no introduction needed here; some of the monsters look simply hilarious in this (particularly that pig guy :D), lots of fun to play on ultra-violence
  • Descent 1/2 - similar to Doom but in 3D; I spent hundreds of hours with these games back in the mid-1990s ;)
  • Duke Nukem II - older side scoller in 8-bit color, but I have spent many hours with this and it can be addictive ;)
  • Fatal Racing - a nice racing game; the physics are messed up but it's fun ;)
  • Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis - great older adventure game with a plot set in the late 1930s
  • Monkey Island 1/2 - hilarious adventure games, some of the jokes in this actually made me fall off my chair when I first saw them :D
  • Mission Critical - another sci-fi adventure game; this has an awesome plot and is one of my favorite all time games, very highly recommended
  • Missionforce: Cyberstorm - futuristic turn based strategy game; set in the same storyline universe as the Earthsiege/Starsiege games and a solid game overall
  • Raptor - a very neat shoot-em-up game; if anyone has played Demonstar, this is the (much better) predecessor to that, quite addictive
  • Skyroads original/xmas - a neat little game where you attempt to jump through various obstacle courses in a ship; once again, this is addictive
  • Scorched Earth - a lot like Worms; lots of options and cool weapon effects
  • The Dig - another sci-fi adventure; some tricky puzzles, but the animations and audio are very good and the game is quite atmospheric

They also have some newer free games there. I have two of them installed - Outbound and Pac3D - and would also recommend them, particularly the first one.

Earthsiege the sequel or prequel to Terranova, no?

If its the game I'm thinking of, its related to System Shock2 (some of the tech is made by Trioptimum, and SHODAN/Citadel Station get mentioned. In Shock2, they make a reference to Terranova and the rebels there, I think).

Actually this game is in the precursor to Starsiege and the very distant predecessor to Tribes/Tribes 2.

I stand corrected. I'm thinking entirely of Terra Nova (squad based combat before there was squad based combat games!). Looking Glass was always good about producing games long before there was a genre for them. :D Ultima Underworld, anyone?

Mike: hey, i have Terranova (strike force centaury I think was the subtitle). I remember it looked damn impressive when it came out (that was the trademark of looking glass then, anyway, anyone remember the first Flight Unlimited?). I got TN as a CD cover game, it was too damn hard for me :(

It was 'Strike Force Centauri', actually. It was evidently very difficult to a lot of people. I gather it shared several interface elements with System Shock 1. It put a lot of people off.

On the other hand, it also had fairly realistic physics. Projectile paths arced properly, so terrain really made a difference. All in all, tough stuff. Like Ultima Underworld, System Shock 1, and System Shock 2, it was at least a year or two ahead of its time.

[/b]OMG, I used to love this game! Being fairly linear it holds zero replay value but if I can ever get it working again I'll play through it again.

  • Descent 1/2 - similar to Doom but in 3D; I spent hundreds of hours with these games back in the mid-1990s ;)
[/b]I wish I could find a way to stop my mouse crapping out in these games, then I'd play them a lot more...

  • Raptor - a very neat shoot-em-up game; if anyone has played Demonstar, this is the (much better) predecessor to that, quite addictive
[/b]Love this, doesn't run too flash on my box though. I'll have to do something about that...

  • Skyroads original/xmas - a neat little game where you attempt to jump through various obstacle courses in a ship; once again, this is addictive
[/b]This game has one of the best music tracks I've ever heard. Some of the stuff, even though its only 8-bit Adlib sound, is just amazing. I just wish I could hear it and be able to play the game at the same time.

The problem with my copy is it just gives you the files and you cant do anything with them. It comes with no install.  I wish it was a self extracting .exe but thats not going to happen, if anyone can install this game successfully please tell me what you did because I am at a loss.

Hey, great to see some similar minds here. ;) I am actually playing through many of these games again; currently I am going through Doom and Doom 2 on ultra violence; these games are really funny. :D Some of the rooms are so filled up with monsters that they end up hitting each other, after which they get mad at each other and ignore me. :D (it is especially funny to see that pig dude try to eat up stuff)

BTW, were any of you able to get Beneath a Steel Sky to work correctly? It works fine for me until I get to a certain point in the game. (the walkway area right after the furnace room near the beginning) When I walk off the screen, it just exits with an error. :( I would really like to play through to the end of the game, as it looks very interesting.

ARJ... wow, that's a blast from the past. I remember the days when this new file format, "ZIP" was emerging... "It'll never catch on," they said...

.arj files are opened by WinRAR, which is what people use to create and unpack .rar files, which are the standard for anyone who's outgrown WinZip, so they're not quite THAT outdated.;)

Earthsiege works fine for me, with full sound and everything; what is the problem?

Do they also have Earthsiege 2 there? That was a pretty good game; the missions were repetitive but the game had good graphics for its time and combat was fun. ;)

Hey, you are not alone there. ;) I spend quite a bit of time these days playing the old favorites and am currently going through Doom and Doom 2; once I finish those, I will probably play either Mission Critical or the Chex Quest games. Some of these games might be old and technologically primitive, but they are just as fun and addictive as the latest releases IMHO. ;):D
