HOLLYWOOD film studio 20th Century Fox has agreed in principle to buy the right to produce a movie based on Japan's best-selling comic book series, Dragon Ball, officials said.

The US firm has recently concluded negotiations with Akira Toriyama, the creator of the comic series, through major Japanese publisher Shueisha, a Shueisha spokesman said.

"The two sides have reached a basic accord over the right to film a movie using real actors based on Dragon Ball," the spokesman said. "Its price and other details will be discussed from now on."

The Japanese media said that 20th Century Fox planned to spend 13 billion yen ($US101m) on the proposed movie, which is likely to be screened in 2004.

The US movie house is considering asking top directors, including Steven Spielberg, to film the series, the Japanese media said.

Dragon Ball features a boy, named Son Goku who increases his power by collecting magical balls containing dragons to help him and his allies in their fight to protect the earth from evil enemies.

Shueisha published the comic series for some 12 years from 1984. The series ran to 42 volumes, which sold 126 million copies in Japan.

Animated television programmes of the series were broadcast in 36 countries. A cartoon film version has already made it to the big screen, drawing a total of 49 million people and earning 36.2 billion yen at the box-office.

They're going to wreck the comic series (which I read) and they also wrote the sumary itself wrong...

OMG - The worst Movie Idea Ever!

Depends on your point of view. It'll sell like mad. Nothing that Akira Toriyama touches ever sells poorly. From the Hollywood POV, that's all that matters.

Dragonball, absolutely bites as an anime, wether you watch the [incredibly butchered beyond hope of recognition] american rendition or the pristine japanese one. It is far better as a manga tiltle, wherein stuff is actually able to happen at a reasonable rate.

Now, what would rock would be a CHRONOTRIGGER movie/anime/etc.

is it posable that these people are realy that stupid, I couldn't **** somthing up that badly if I tried, they must spend years, no decades practising there moronic art to so perfictly get everything bass-acward every time they go to make a movie of something they know only that it will make them a lot of cash if they make it

I faintly think that I remember I think I saw an ad of a Chrono Trigger anime (in Japan), but I think I remember I think that I think that I'm thinking I'm probably thinking I'm wrong about that.
