I was talking to a friend of mine last night and I told him about several Freespace 2 mods like this one and BSG Beyond the Red Line and he said these mods will never seen a release because the ppl holding the rights, in this mods case G. Lucas (And we all know how G. Lucas is when it comes to money) kill the mod before it get's to final release due to breach of copyright.

He said several Half Life 2 mods where stopped by this.

Are these mods going see the same fate?

Since you mentioned BtRL... they released a demo and weren't stopped by copyright issues. Besides, no one is making profit here.

It's all free. Unlike Warhammer 40k's weird copyright thing, Lucasarts aren't too bothered about free initiatives like this. They don't mind fanfilms and the like, after all. It's all free press for them in the end.

Any mods like this one or... that homeworld one... weren't shut down, so Fate of the Galaxy should be fine, as long as we don't pay money for it.

Fhew, that's good news because I am really really looking forward to these mods.

The very first game I bought for the PC was Tie fighter, I actually bought the game before I had a PC and the only reason I bought the PC was because I wanted to play Tie Fighter.

I have been a space sim fan for a long time though.

First game I played was Star Raiders on the Atari, followed by The last Starfighter and I recall some Star Wars game with a smily like death star that broke in 6 pieces after you blew it up.
It was colored lines drawing graphics, a bit of an upgrade from the early Elite style.

Ever since Freespace 2 there hasn't been a realy great space sim released so I am truly grateful to people such as you modders here.

The truly great games ever are being modded atm I personally cannot wait to play em.

Wing Commander and the Star Wars type games, with a nice surprise for the BSG Beyond the Red Line mod.

At the moment I am enjoying all them Freespace 2 based mods to keep my mind of what's to come, well, a little bit that is.

I can't wait to park my behind in a Tie Advanced and shoot some rebel scum, muhahahaha!! :D

It's TIE, people, TIE ! As in Twin Ion Engines. Geez, nobody will ever learn how to spell things correctly :P But yeah, as long as you maintain a rather low profile and don't ask money for this, everything should be okay.

I got my Tie Fighter Collector's CD Rom right here on the shelf and it's written Tie Fighter.

But I don't mind writing it as TIE Fighter to make you happy dude, no problem at all.  :pimp:

Well, strange, since my TIE Fighter Collector's CD ROM has TIE ;) Anyway, no big fuss, I can't make people do what I want, now can I ? ;)

You mean this one?

Anyway, it's true that Lucasarts normally doesn't get in the way of fan projects, but they did interfere a bit with Galactic Conquest (SW mod for BF1942).  It seems they only care when a free mod might give serious competition to a product they're going to release (Battlefront).  Since the market for a space flight only sim doesn't seem to appeal to Lucasarts these days, we're probably ok.

Really?  I played that mod quite a bit back in the day...and don't remember specifically about any copyright issues they had.  What did they do?

(By the way Galactic Conquest was WAY better than Battlefront)

I think they got a C&D at one point or another.  My memory might be failing me though.

My Tie Fighter CD-ROM is from 1995, not even in a fancy box, just a dual CD box and a small manual.

The bonus disk has a demo on it from Full Throttle with the big chin biker dude in it.

I believe that matter was settled when the GQ team agreed to remove Star Wars title from their name and not to use any Star Wars music in the mod.

Is this the official reason for the C&D?

Oh, that's right - earlier versions had a techno remix of the Star Wars theme as background for the title/menu screen, which was removed in later releases.

Well apparently according to LC the official reason was the use of the name Star Wars and the music.  We might have to take the Star Wars off the website at some point then, but we should be ok on the music front.
