I introduced FreeSpace to a friend and helped him install it. 

He's running it on a Macbook

First he downloaded Freespace 2, then launched Turley's installer, chose to install everything but the windows and linux builds.  Port 3.1.1, media vps, everything.  Well he finally found a launcher for the mac done everything the way he was supposed to and then the game freezes up when loading the mission when he has the mediavps enabled for the port.  Have you guys encountered this yet?  We searched around but cannot find anything. 

For mac what vp's does he need?  Is there a current 3.6.10? We are just lost and I don't want him to miss out on this game.

Does it happen with other combinations (vanilla, just FSPort, just MediaVPs)? Also, has he remembered to select the correct campaign from the Campaign Room?

For mac what vp's does he need?

The .vp files are the same, regardless of operating system.

Is there a current 3.6.10?

He's using the port mediaVPs with the port and he has the right campaign selected, he's also trying the nightly build now.

EDIT: Still freezes on the first frame of the loading screen. This only happens with the media vps though.

Hmm. I still don't know about the availability of debug builds for Mac and/or Linux. But it might be a good idea to check the size of the MediaVPs. admiral_wolf had a corrupted download, revealed when his fs2_open.log showed the MV_Complete.vp to contain one file, when it should have over 5 000 files.

Ok I'll check.  He has re-downloaded from Turey's installer twice now so I doubt it.  No matter if he's using his Fs2 campaign character or port.  When mediavps are there they crash his loading screen.

Exactly. It is always possible that the download is corrupt in that end or there are other server-related problems. There are mirrors in the MediaVPs release thread. Manual download surely couldn't hurt.

Thanks for your help Lobo.  We just overlooked the fact that the graphics settings were causing the mac to crash.  Mainly the high poly models.  We appreciate it, he's pretty excited about playing it.

I had the same problem (PC, by the way). MV_Assets.vp was corrupt. Replacing it fixed the issue of crashing at the mission loading screen. I also downloaded my freespaceopen kit using Tureys installer.

The intriguing thing about it was that my corrupted file and the working version were the same size down to the last byte. I guess i always imagined them not to but I suppose even if they both contain all the same amounts of binary values it doesnt mean that the values themselves are all the same.

Indeed. It was rather difficult to pinpoint the source of the problem on the first occasion. The file sizes were the same and even the checksums generated by debug builds were the same. It was a random stroke of luck that we came up with the suggestion to redownload the MediaVPs.
