BANASKANTHA: A two-year long 'yagna' to save the world from the clutches of the economic crisis is underway in nondescript Ramosana village of
Mehsana district and is estimated to cost Rs 150 crore, organisers of the yagna said.

Organiser of the event and convenor of the religious trust Koti Chandi Mahayana Seva Samiti (KCMSS), Dahyabhai Patel, said that the 'yagna' was to invoke divine blessings of Goddess Meldi to relieve the world of the economic crisis that "does not seem to end."

"The ritual began 15 days ago asking for divine solace to restore prosperity, environmental well-being and overall world peace and happiness," Patel said.

The yagna, which will enter its 16th day today, will continue uninterruptedly for two years, he added.

"The first phase of the yagna will end after 10 million Chandi Path slokas in praise of Goddess Meldi have been chanted," he said.

Having looked up the unit and currency conversions, they're spending the equivalent of 30.6 million USD on this. I'm not sure how hard to laugh at this.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Well, at least they're trying to do something good, even though it probably won't work.

That money could be put to much better use, especially in a country with such obscene poverty and welfare problems.

ca. 30,000,000 / 3,000 = 10,000 / 2 years = 5,000 / 365 =~ 14 USD per priest per day.

....

Does food cost more over there? You'd think that priests could get by on 8  USD per day, or less.

8 x 365 x 2 x 3000 =~ 17.5 million USD.

5 x 365 x 2 x 3000 =~ 11 million USD.

there are millions of indians that live in what is pretty much low-intensity ethnic conflict

there are millions of indians who enjoy a completely westernized lifestyle

there are millions of indians that live in abject poverty without any kind of medical aid, civilian infrastructure or even political representation

People would rather toss their money into a wishing well and pray to end hunger than actually use that money to feed the hungry.

Amazing.

We don't see that all the time here? It used to bother me so much as a little kid that my mum would give $20 to the church (which it typically used for renovations) but wouldn't give anything to the homeless man outside.

But don't you think that the Vatican NEEDED that money as well? How would the pope live without a gold-plated room?

Personally I agree with Galemp on this one, people need to be educated, maybe I should hire Bill Maher.
