Hi,

All recently purchased Freespace 2 for the first time from GOG. LOL never played it before even though I've been PC gaming for longer than i care to say......and am now in the process of downloading updates etc with the Freespace open installer.

Anyhow I bought Freespace 2 primarily to play LAN games over a home network (currently got 3 PC's set up) and i just wondered how easy this is to do? do i still need to register etc?

We couldn't get it to work with just the retail version hence we are trying the open installer.

Any help would be great.

Cheers

It's great fun. I've never had any problem with it -- so long as the computers are on the same network, games should be detected automatically.

Thanks for the reply.

Spent a good hour now watching the open installer download....... :sigh:

Is it an easy feature installed with the front end or do we each need online usernames?

Guess I will find out when it finishes!!

You can do it 2 ways.  If you want to play just on the LAN with no one on the web then you can play simply by turning off PXO in the game.  Hit F2 from the bridge menu ans select multi.  If you don't see the other computer you can put it's IP in.

If you want to play both locally and with people on the net then you should set up an account for each person and leave the PXO turned on.  This would be my pick unless you are just doing a one time thing like a LAN party.

We tried turning PXO off with the retail version and entering the IP address but couldn't get it to work, ill try again when its finished Downloading........

On a side note I'm currently downloading all the files from the Freespace open installer to my main computer, can i just copy the Freespace 2 file over the network to the other 2 computers when its done? could really do with not having to download all this again for the other 2 comps my ISP D/L limit is only 5gb.

Preferrably. In addition to saving download time, the people hosting the files downloaded by the Installer are always happy if bandwidth can be saved.

When it's down downloading make sure you set up the network in the launcher to LAN.

Also it would be a good idea to test the MediaVPs before copying them to the other machines.  They tend to corrupt on download quite a bit.

Do you mean change it to LAN when its finished downloading?

What are the MediaVPs and how do i test them? sorry completely new to this.

It's still downloading(!) so I'm off to bed.

Thanks all for the responses so far.

To run the game your run the launcher.  There is a network tab in the launcher.  You will need to set it to LAN and T1/ADSL.

The MediaVPs are the FS2 Upgrade enhancements.  You can test them by setting mediavps as the mod in the launcher, and running a few missions in single.  If you crash they are probably corrupted.

The Co-op retail campaign is included in mv_core. Make sure all players have their object refresh rate set to 'LAN' and that you're all using the same Freespace Open builds.

We successfully ran a co-op campaign between a PC and several Macs with only minor crash problems. Speak up if there's any trouble.
