That a command line option enabling glide and directional thrust for all fighters can make it's way into a build? Would make the game much more enjoyable with the right control setup.

Little to no chance. Those things would have a severe effect on balance and gameplay, and as such should be left as a matter for tables rather than a simple command line. You can add it to the ships you want it for fairly easily through overriding said tables by placing a modified version that allows glide etc. into a mod directory and selecting that from the launcher, though. The wiki should have the info on the specific ships.tbl options.
