Rebellion & Sega to make AVP3?
Any thoughts about it? I wonder why they didn't go with Monolith, since they did a much better job with AVP2 then Rebellion did with AVP1 (not that it was a horrible game, it just wasn't as good). I also wonder why they waited so long, especially since the ending had "make a sequel for me" written all over it. AVP2 is 8 years old but from what I remember it was a hit.

Wow Kosh.  You just tossed a grenade by saying AvP2 was better then 1, you know that?

At any rate, they delayed or ****canned Colonial Marines, and Obsidian....well, do they have any experience in FPSRPGS?  So, I'm hard pressed to be excited.  There were several excellent AvP games (Jag, PC1, PC1) and some bad ones (everything else), but still.....the last decent pure aliens game I played with on the goddamned commodore 64.

Re: Rebellion & Sega to make AVP3?
i remember owning an aliens game on the saga saturn (alien trilogy i think) looked like it was using some kind of doom engine. that was pretty good. also had alien 3 for the super nintendo, was one of the best movie-games ever i thought.

but the avp games always kinda kicked ass, did things with fps games that nobody else ever tried to do. i was pretty excited to get to play the game as a face hugger in avp2 for example. but yea any new avp games are welcome.

AVP was really innovative, I love both those games to bits.

The time is definitely right for a new generation of AVP, ever since Doom 3 came out and showed us what could be done now with shadows and light.

It says very explicitly in the first sentence of the article that it is PC & console. AVP2 was better in many ways: It had an actual story (which was interesting to boot), far better balancing, unlimited saves, probably a few others too that I'm missing.

Re: Rebellion & Sega to make AVP3?
No No No AvP 1 was far superior, save for the Predator which was wank. It didn't have a silly cliche story and no save games meant it was scary as hell. Not really sure how it was unbalanced ?

Also, AvP2 made the ultimate mistake and changed the pulse rifle sound effect! The best souding assault rifle evar and game makers keep messing with it!

I played Alien Trilogy on PS1 and it was terrible. It had the uniqe aspect of your being able to run faster than bullets could travel. You could fire off a couple of shots, run past them, stand in the way and get hit by your own shots. Deflection shooting a solider running 3 foot ahead of you. It was funny for about 5 minutes.

To quote Kotaku

"There's a new Alien vs Predator game in development. It's being developed by Rebellion, who were behind the original PC shooter that I think is only one of the best FPS games ever. Cause for joy? Sadly, no! For starters, their new AvP game is based on the upcoming sequel to the awful Alien vs Predator movie. Second, it's on PSP. Third? It's a third-person action game. Look, for all I know this could be some awesome PSP third-person action game based on a storied franchise that'll blow our baby socks clean into tomorrow. But when you put Rebellion to work on a game involving Aliens and/or Predators, and it's not on PC and it's not an FPS, a certain level of disappointment is to be expected."

The predator was unbalanced for sure, I don't remember too much about the rest except for the Marine being pathetically weak (granted he's still weak in the second game, but not nearly as much). The limited number of saves made it incredibly frustrating, and it was something I always hated about console games. The lack of story made the game far less interesting than it could have been. What pull is there to keep pushing on other than just to get though the level? Not much.

I think we're talking about two different games here, I remember seeing previews for that game last year. How old is that article?

EDIT: Yeah, I found the other game you were talking about for the PSP, based on requiem.

See me for more details

Yeah, I'll give you that. There is a mod to fix it though, so it's not a major ding.

Well I only played it on PC. One of the first games I got with my first true PC as it happens. I'll skip the Predator as it was very poor. Both Marine and Alien were very powerful in attack. The Alien relied on speed, stealth and agility (wall and ceiling crawling) to engage in meliee only attacks. Marine had very powerful weapons but had to "eyeball" Aliens.

Both single player campains suffered badly from insta-death syndrome on the harder settings which, I admit was frustrating, but seemed in keeping with Aliens

The first game had an arcade style purity to it. No story, no nonsense, just get from A to B and don't die.

Me too, but limited saves is something common in console games, and since Rebellion mostly does console stuff that's probably why they had that feature.

True but combined with the limited number of saves spells trouble.

Re: Rebellion & Sega to make AVP3?
Try recovering from a death in R-Type or any similar old school shooter. That's hard.

Pft, kids today. They have it so easy.

 ;)

Re: Rebellion & Sega to make AVP3?
Now now, be honest, it's only hard to recover from a death in r-type if you're good enough to get to a later level, but not good enough to not die there.

Re: Rebellion & Sega to make AVP3?
Well, in honesty, R-Type had some pretty ropey collision detection, though, not as bad as Scramble, which was my all-time favourite game when I was young, apart from The Maze, which was more about luck than judgement ;)

I don't count those bullet hell titles as "games" so much as "exercises in masochistic masturbation," myself. :p

Devilmaycry3 *coughcough*

What exactly were the main differences between AvP1 and 2? I played the demo of 1 and are planning (for a long time now) to buy one of them.
