Hi all! I used to be a huge Freelancer junkie, but lately ive been getting the itch to actually use a joystick in space combat, so i decided to purchase and download freespace 2. I have never played any of the freespace games. I want to use the open source project, but im wondering, should i play through the mod that adds the original freespace campaign to it first, and then play the freespace 2 campaign? I was thinking this might give me a deeper understanding of the story, just wondering what your suggestions are? thanks!

thanks! im looking very forward to playing freespace for the first time. alas, i must wait for the 1.2 gb download to finish. probably won't get to play it until tomorrow as I have to go grab my old joystick from my parent's house. hope they kept it lol.

If I didn't know any better, I'd say the Saitek X52 was made just for Freespace 2. I've used one before--excellent stick and throttle setup. If only they had a force-feedback version with a good center spring and Vista support...

Huh? The X52 DOES have Vista support. I'm running vista with it right now! And yes, it is awesome.

i will just make due with my old joystick, cant remember all the specs it had on it but i think it will work just fine for now. im heading over to my parents house tonight to try and sneak around and find out. yipeee.

You're in for a treat! I just hope you have everything set up properly. Make sure you download the Media VPs manually, not from the installer, and follow the directions in the FSPort release thread to get it and ST:R configured properly for best graphics.

hmm i seem to be confused at how to install everything correctly. i thought that using the newest open source installer installed fsport correctly for you? im sort of confused, can anyone give me a link or directions to what should be installed manually and what shouldnt be installed using the open source installer? thanks

The MediaVPs should be downloaded manually from the release thread, and you should download the latest 3.6.10 build for your OS from the Knightly Builds forum.

Other than that I believe the Installer is fine. Correct?

I'm talking about force feedback. I had no support for force feedback from Logitech, when I had my Wingman Force 3D.

thanks for all the help everyone! it seems i have freespace port up and running pretty good! although i had to get a cheap usb joystick because my laptop doesnt have an input for a da-15 port like my old one has. oh well, it will do.

off to enjoy freespace for the first time!

the biggest mistake i made was playing freespace 2 first, i didnt get the plot of the vasudans, shivans.

though freespace 2 does have background information on all events on the great war and other subjects relating it.

so for your own sake, play the first one first, buy them off GoG!

The smartest thing I did was visit Interplay and YouTube and learn about how Into the Lions' Den began. As a result, I've never been rammed by Sathanas 3. EVER.
