Guys, let him be...he's been around for years (he recently deleted most of his posts, thus the low postcount), and while he used to really tick me off, he's not a bad guy. Just has a unique way of expressing himself.
Let him do his thing, it's not hurting anyone.
Not to mention, he's actually correct in this case. Or partially, anyway.
Software firewalls are generally a poor security solution because they rely on proper configuration at the user end and they clog system resources. They also operate on the very thing they're supposed to protect, which isn't necessarily ideal. This is why a hardware firewall (e.g. a router, or basic box with something like m0n0wall installed) is a preferable solution.
However, even with a hardware firewall, it doesn't hurt to have a little backup. The Vista firewall, when coupled with a router, is actually an excellent solution. It's unobtrusive, yet provides a minimum level of protection by warning you when something is trying to access the internet. So long as you're not an idiot that says yes to everything, it's a good thing to enable when you have a good router with NAT (SPI would be an added bonus) and don't want to deal with a full software firewall.
Loading a system with multiple antivirus programs, a full software firewall, plus an external router is just ridiculous overkill. One antivirus (and not Norton or McAffee, thanks), the Windows firewall, and a good router is all you need.
