I hate posting such incomplete work against seasoned mastery, but here's a little progress.

So far so good. All I'm missing is the cockpit.

I already announced my retirement twice, yet here I am. If I bring up that topic again, don't believe a word.

Thanks,

I'll get to the cockpit later in the week.  Then I'll start getting fussy with the details and textures.

I'd really like to see this one ingame - I've always loved the Naboo fighter's design. :D

Like everyone, I thought that their ships were too shiny and sleek for Star Wars.

George retconned the designs to make them look better. :p

Now a quick question: Is there any way to export from Rhino to a format that we can use for the game?  Out of curiosity

LOL.  Here's a little more progress.  I added the cockpit finally.  I'll add a few more details to this NURBS model and then move it over to polys.  Being an old schooler myself, I don't think the designs used in the prequels really followed the look of Star Wars.  But this is more of a learning excercise for me than anything.  Once the Naboo is done I'll consult the board for what else they would like to see.

Once I've added a little more detail, I'll convert the model from NURBS to polygons.  Rhino supports the export of several formats.  After the conversion I was hoping to tweak the polygon model in some program like Wings3D.  Then I'd just need to move it over to TrueSpace for final export correct?  Thanks.

That way may work, you would probably lose your smoothing though.  DAE might be a better option, if Rhino supports it.

[rant]Even though the N-1 as seen in the movies doesn't really fit in well with the civil war era ships, I think it is a nice design that is true to GL's hot rod inspiration from his good movie making days.  If you strip the yellow and chrome paint, pull off the tapering tails on the engines and fuselage, swap in a couple mean looking after-market cannon tips protruding from the nose, and generally rough it up and make it so that not everything is completely flush to the fighter's lines, you'd have a nice neutral interceptor that would, IMO, not look out of place in the time period the mod is focused on.  It has a bit of chariot to it, and a bit of cloud car.  Functionally, as the Z-95 is to X-wing, the N-1 could be to the A-wing--a republic era horse that still finds work with planetary security forces and pirate/mercenary units.  Even just a gray texture variant would go a long way towards making it look good fighting TIEs.  At any rate, I like it a lot better than the T-wing :D [/rant]

The model btw looks very nice.

Even though it does fall prey to the uber-shiny ethos that so much of the prequels exhibit and doesn't fit in at all with what comes later, I've always liked the N-1 from a pure ship design standpoint.  One had to take what one could get from Episode 1, and I'm happy to toss it in with Duel of the Fates and the podrace.

I moved it over to Gmax to see how the polygon version would look.

I don't see it as being too shiny at all.  Remember these ships were built in a time of peace on a planet with a very bright and sunny atmosphere. If you looked up on a sunny day it might be hard to see.  Now in space it's a different story but unless you make the ships black that problem exists for every ship.

I never really understood the whole "doesn't fit in" thing.

What, chroming makes it stick out? I figured it was like fifties' hot rods which got chromed up to look better. It's not like the Nubians got much mileage out of the fighters anyway.
