Then create a shortcut to FRED, right-click on it and add "-mod <insert your mod folder's name>" (without the quotes) in the shortcut's path. If it doesn't work, let us know.

For the path am I putting it in the start in or the target box? Sorry about the questions but I'm way confused. The folder is "Ships"
So I'm doing
C:\Games\FreeSpace2-modShips
Is that correct?

I got it to stop giving me an error message and I've got it set as
C:\Games\FreeSpace2\FRED2.exe -mod Ships
in the target box. Now I can't find the ships in FRED

What did you place in the Ships folder?

Also, I see a major glitch. You're using FRED2, not FRED2 Open - that's why it doesn't work. Try to get a build of FRED 2 Open.

I'm using Windows so Linux won't work. And I'm looking for FRED Open specifically. Not that well versed in computers. Just trying to get this set up.

Download that and then extract it into my FS2 folder? This will give me FRED Open?

That's the link you need. Check the first post of that thread, click on the link and download.

You should then place the contents of the download(two FSO builds and two FRED2 Open builds) in your root FreeSpace 2 directory.

In the FreeSpace Launcher, browse the FSO build marked with "r" and choose "Apply." Do not browse the build marked with "d", since it's there for debugging purposes, only.

EDIT:

Create a shortcut to the FRED 2 Open build marked with "r" and follow the hints I posted above (add "-mod Ships", without the quotes).
