Okay....One, you lack a debriefing. Two, you could include a few events to give the player some indication as to how far they have progressed, or some sort of other feedback. You could take a look at Wing Commander Saga's Gauntlet missions for inspiration.

But that's too easy. Besides, now that he knows how to get a simple combat scenario set up, it's time to start messing around with events (and the background editor, maybe). I consider this a learning experience for him.
