Ok then, how do you guys hand out art galleries now, hmmm? Well, keep on doing it, but just assign an avatar to those with a gallery.

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. Good point - but if wegave out avatars to everyone with a suitable HLP gallery that wasn't hosted by us then they could easily say "host my art gallery" and we'd have to oblige them under our own rules (not that we wouldn't want to host them but you know what I mean...).

Personally I think if it's not on HLP you shouldn't really get an avatar for it - or else everyone could argue they deserve an avatar for something and there'd be no end of madness

Well, you should define some criteria, indeed. I just can't think of any that would be completely fair, and that's why my first reply was "More avatars! Run!!"... :D

Who's talking about galleries outside of HLP? For them maybe you could link their title, if they have one, to their page. But keep the image-based avatar-ing limited to HLP-hosted galleries.

Seemed like you were talking about giving all "HLP worthy" gallery owners an avatar dude, did I mis-understand?

Ummm, perhaps... Mr. X has a gallery hosted on GeoCities or something. That's nice, but it ain't on HLP, therefore, no avatar.

Mr. Y has nice renders, but no gallery. HLP decides to give himm his own HLP art gallery. Therefore, Mr. Y should have an avatar.

Or look at wEvil: his work is outstanding, but he has his own gallery. So no avatar. But if he were to submit a few of his more relevant renders to HLP for hosting, or if HLP decided on opening up a gallery for him, he would get an avatar.

Thunder: it was about a month before people started really making fun of me for my work. I wasn't particularly offended, and you have no idea the good it did as far as mod quality goes...:D

HLP isn't just a place to make people feel good. When I came here, people posted under the strict understanding that people would be ruthless in their judgements of second-rate work. Complimenting everything and pampering the semicompetent makes all the nice things you have to say absolutely worthless to everyone, including in the eyes of the creator, insults their intelligence and emotional stability, and moreover denies them the ability to improve their work based on constructive criticism, which is one of the most valuable things this forum has (quickly becoming a had, now) to offer.

Lots of people here are clever, more or less skilled in modeling, and willing to learn. You do them no service by saying "well... this and this could be improved a bit, but overall it's good enough- you deserve a gallery for your genius!" You do us no service by making us sift through the same dozen semiskilled sketches 50 times to find something we like. You do the community no service by allowing everyone's abilities to stagnate in the absence of something to aspire to. Having a gallery should be one of the most prestigious honors that can be bestowed in HLP, not just something that's tossed to every yahoo with a pencil and a scanner or TrueSpace. If they're willing to do work, but not yet good at renders, put them in their place, give them all the advice they should need ('S what we've got a full complement of semiprofessional 3D artists here for, no?), and get them to do better. When they can do something that earns genuine admiration, they get a gallery. If they continue to suck, they can try and start a campaign, something that can be enjoyable no matter how bad the head is at modeling, rendering, or drawing. Sound fair?

It is time for us to join together and end the iron reign of "not bad"! SEMISKILLED RENDERERS OF THE HLP, UNITE!

My opinion:

If they have an art gallery on HLP, give 'em a generic "Art hosted on HLP" avatar. Example: Carl, Setekh.
If they have something cool that's not on HLP, give them a title. Example: Mikhael (404 Error).
