Re: told you can`t go to prom.
Thing is, if you strike out at Scotty, it leaves Scotty alone to defend himself, whereas if you criticise the subject, it means that everyone can pile in....er.... I mean join the debate :)

I think we should respect Scotty and his beliefs. There is as much diversity within the 'Christian' group as there is within the 'American' group, and neither group deserves broad generalizations.

Exactly, I can't say I'm a massive fan of religion debates, but if they are going to happen, then it should be open to all levels, it isn't about attacking Christians, it's about debating tenets within Christianity itself and how they are interpreted.

I will not respect his beliefs. His beliefs are ridiculous.

Just like the beliefs of Scientologists, Mormons, Hindus, Jews, Muslims, etc. Any fluffy message behind the beliefs is irrelevant. The beliefs themselves are stupid and serve only to muddle anything good that the religion may have originally been based on.

It's indirect ridicule, innit?

Christianity opens the door for people to do all sorts of stupid things, because Christianity is a set of beliefs which encourage a lot of stupid things to be done.

Kill witches, outlaw dancing, whatever. It's all so, so stupid.

Criticism of Christianity is criticism of Christians.

Yes. Because the message of the Bible is to outlaw dancing.

At this point he is pretty much asking for it.  For the record I attended a private Lutheran school for 4th through 8th grade.  It was nothing like the school the article is describing.  Yes some private schools have crazy rules but not all of them do.  Many of them give students a quality education.  Also before you call every single religion in the world stupid how much do you know about these religions.  If you know nothing then you are ignorant and should learn something before spewing an uninformed opinion.  I will admit you are entitled to hold such a baseless opinion but that does not make it right.  Also no where in the Bible is dancing outlawed.

Why are you even here talking about it then?

What is the message, then? Once you get past all the, uh, "metaphor" all you have is a bunch of wimpy lessons about being nice.

I say cut out the middle man. Would do everybody quite a lot of good.

What do you care what the message is? Do you believe? No? Then who cares?

Does their belief in the magical sky god and his pop up book ruin your beliefs or lack of?

Re: told you can`t go to prom.
It is a bit of a conundrum.  On one hand you are so close to completing school and this act of dissension does threaten your ability to graduate or at least your standing.  On the other hand it is highly rankling to have a bunch of arrogant zealots reaching there weasely fingers into your private life.

I suppose it comes done to making a clear reasoned decision on whether the consequences are acceptable for flipping off the ignorant prigs in the name of freedom.

Actually you should care, if your precieve something is a threat, and that threat has an ability to affect your life then yes you would be foolish not to try to understand it or care about it.   Given the effect religion has had and still today to shape the course of history, if you do take issue with it then it obviously something worth concern.

Whether that kid can graduate or not because his parents think he'll catch "the sex" at a public school is zero threat to me.

They aren't forcing their religion on me and I wouldn't have to make any of my hypothetical kids do it either.

If they want to pray to a giant Chia Pet and go to a warehouse, dress as Cheech and Chong while they whack each other with pool cues singing the theme to Green Acres in ancient Greek, I don't care.

Re: told you can`t go to prom.
I absolutely hate people like that (the school in general), Fundamentalist Christians to that extreme shouldn't be existing in the 21st Century, it's just that simple. If the asshole was living in Australia we'd have taken care of him already :P He deserves to have his face kicked in for even trying to impose that kind of thing on a teen these days, if he can't move on from 1 AD, then that's HIS problem, not Frost's. School rules or not, there must be something standing in the way of the school trying to infringe on out of hours activities. Arrghhh!

Fixed for great justice.

Except that the (vast) majority of people who call themselves "Christians" today don't believe anything remotely near such things...and those that do are subject to ridicule as much by other people who call themselves "Christians" as by anyone else.  What you're doing is no different than saying something along the lines of, "Muslim = raghead terrorist."

But honestly, I don't expect that to have any impact on you.  Funny how "tolerance" is such a one-way street to some people, eh?

I have to agree with Mongoose here. I think you often have good points, iamzack, but this is a bit too much.
