Choppy performance on fast pc
I just installed FSO, I used the newb friendly guide and everything worked. The game starts fine but I experience some pretty bad stuttering. In the second or third mission when the big capital ship warps on screen that's when it occurs. Maybe it's because I'm using vista 64 but honestly I don't know. I am surprised that this game even with all the graphical updates my comp can't handle it. Any advise is greatly appreciated, thx. I have up to date drivers too.

EVGA GTX280 OC @693/1491/1323

Hrm. You're playing through the main Freespace 2 campaign and you're getting lag when the Psamtik warps in?

For starts, could you make sure you're using 3.6.10 RC3? It can be obtained from the Freespace Source Code Project forum if you don't have it already.

Are you running in Direct3D or OpenGL?

:welcomered:

Just to be safe, you haven't accidentally checked any of the "troubleshooting" options on the FSO launcher, have you?
If you don't have Knossos, you need it.

Re: Choppy performance on fast pc
When you say up to date drivers did you get them through windows update or directly from the manufacturer.  You need to go through the manufacturer.  The ones provided by microsoft probably won't support OpenGL too well and that is all FS2_Open 3.6.10 will use.

Well he's OCing, so it's a safe bet he knows his way around a PC.

Not necessarily.  Some computers are built and shipped overclocked.

For example, my computer uses an Intel Core2 Extreme X9650 CPU.  Ordinarily, it clocks in at 3 GHz.  When I got it, it was overclocked to 3.67.

Sorry for a late reply I was caught up playing this UFC game with my brother.

Anyway, yes I am using OpenGL and no I'm not using any of the troubleshooting options on the FSO launcher. Also my drivers are all legit from the manufacturer.

If you mean the .exe the launcher browses to, I'm using fs2_open_3_6_10. I also have one that say fs2_open_3_6_10_RC2 but that one lagged the game even more so I use the other. I didn't know there was an RC3 version. That is probably what's causing the problem. If someone could post a link to the correct one that would be awesome.

Thanks for the help too. I can't believe I never heard of this game before, I was probably too busy playing something else when the game game out. Back in the day one of my favorite games was X-Wing Alliance, and I feel stupid for never playing FS2 until now. It brings back so many fond memories....why the hell don't developers make anymore flight sims for PC!?!? or better yet where the hell did MECHWARRIOR GO!? I want more Madcat dammit!

Re: Choppy performance on fast pc
Just head over here.

You're using the MediaVPs as a mod, correct? Did you download them directly from Turey's Installer? It's possible they're corrupt. Could you run a debug build (ends in -d or -debug), load up the mission in question, run through, and then post your fs2 log file from /[your Freespace directory]/data?

Re: Choppy performance on fast pc
I used the installer but then deleted the MediaVPs that were downloaded and got the newer ones.

Re: Choppy performance on fast pc
Thanks for the link. I will test it out now.

Re: Choppy performance on fast pc
Is it safe to delete fs2_open_3_6_10_RC2 and whatever is related to it? I am replacing it with RC3 anyway.

Re: Choppy performance on fast pc
And on the factory drivers, are they the latest ones or the ones that came with the card?

Yes on the RC2 thing.

They're the newest drivers from Nvidia.

Re: Choppy performance on fast pc
Ok something is wrong. Now the game stutters even though it runs at 60 fps or 100 fps with vsync off. I'm on the mission where you have to protect the enif station. The mission begins with my ship facing the station and even though its running at high fps whenever I look over to the station the camera stutters very slightly. Its not game breaking but very annoying. Is there anything that might fix this??

Hmm...

I've been having some frame rate problems in IL-2 Sturmovik (another OpenGL game) when ever the multi-core optimization option is enabled on NVidia Control Panel (can't remember the exact option name but you should find it fine), so I keep it off and haven't had any problems with FS2_Open. And I have just Athlon64 X2 6000+, GeForce 8800GT and three gigs of memory in use (with 32-bit OS), so performance-wise you should have absolutely no problems. It has to be related to some other thing than hardware performance, and the most likely culprit is some driver setting or other. Or 64-bit system, of combination of them.

Also, you could set processor affinity to a single core through Task Manager. Though that shouldn't be causing problems in the first place... :nervous:
