Will Freelancer replace Freespace?
Freelancer can't replace Freespace.

Freespace is a space combat shooter, in the arcade tradition. It requires skills on the stick and throttle and its lots of fun. I've never regretted buying it.

Freelancer is bull-buggered agglomeration of insane ideas. PILOT... SHIP... WITH MY... MOUSE?! Um. That game will have to pull out some seriously awe inspiring story, graphics, sound, missions and moddability for me to even consider purchasing it. Looking at what Digital Anvil has said about the game makes me regret ever giving any money to a Chris Roberts venture before.

SERIOUSLY...! | {The Sandvich Bar} - Rhino-FS2 Tutorial | CapShip Turret Upgrade | The Complete FS2 Ship List | System Background Package

"...The quintessential quality of our age is that of dreams coming true. Just think of it. For centuries we have dreamt of flying; recently we made that come true: we have always hankered for speed; now we have speeds greater than we can stand: we wanted to speak to far parts of the Earth; we can: we wanted to explore the sea bottom; we have: and so  on, and so on: and, too, we wanted the power to smash our enemies utterly; we have it. If we had truly wanted peace, we should have had that as well. But true peace has never been one of the genuine dreams - we have got little further than preaching against war in order to appease our consciences. The truly wishful dreams, the many-minded dreams are now irresistible - they become facts." - 'The Outward Urge' by John Wyndham

"The very essence of tolerance rests on the fact that we have to be intolerant of intolerance. Stretching right back to Kant, through the Frankfurt School and up to today, liberalism means that we can do anything we like as long as we don't hurt others. This means that if we are tolerant of others' intolerance - especially when that intolerance is a call for genocide - then all we are doing is allowing that intolerance to flourish, and allowing the violence that will spring from that intolerance to continue unabated." - Bren Carlill

huh? is the fact that freelancer may be crap denies the fact that the WC series was mostly an exelent one?

Btw, I've heard good reactions from sceptical players about that mouse system, when they got to try it when visiting DA.
I'm still not convinced, but i'll lend the game of benefits of doubt.
For graphics, the ships are kick-ass ( I won't mention their design tho...), but the backgrounds really dunnot impress me, far from that. For the story, well, It's Chriss roberts, so it should be good (Starlancer was Erin Roberts game).
Really, I'm really wondering about that game, I guess the demo will tell me what to think of it

Um... Yes. Freelancer, if it turns out to be EXACTLY what Digital Anvil says it will be, it will cancel out every single shred of greatness that was the Wing Commander Saga. It would be like Thief 3 being about running around with a big gun shooting steampunk mecha. Its... its just wrong.

Space-Sim + Mouse-Control = WORST IDEA EVAR.

[my opinion]
when I go to play a space sim, it is for the immersive experience. I sit down, I put my hands on a stick and a throttle and I shut out the rest of the world. For that time I am a fighter pilot. For that time there is nothing but me, the hull of my (admittedly nonexistent) ship and the depthless void of the inky black. In that place, in that setting, I don't want a mouse to control my ship. I don't want a keyboard to control my ship. I want the complete control of a stick and throttle. I want the sure knowledge of exactly what my ship is doing and to what degree its doing it. A mouse cannot do that. If you want, I'll give a technical explanation as to exactly why.
[/myopinion]

Yes, the Demo is going to be the true test of the thing. When it comes, if it doesn't have a fully integrated stick-and-throttle control scheme, it had better rock my socks or it had better have a written apology from Chris Roberts. If it turns out to be exactly what DA says it will be, I will not buy it. Its as much of a negative statement as I can possibly make to Chris Roberts.

I know it sounds extreme, but its the only way to look at things in my opinion. Space-sims are my absolute favorite genre of games. I don't know why. Games like Independence War 2 are the Grail to me. I very much dislike the idea of dumbing down piloting to MOUSE controls and turning the game into Diablo-in-space, especially after Chris Roberts promised us, the customers and players, that we would be getting the best thing in space sims ever.

Uh no!! Mouse control is A-1 SUPAR! Still the joystick is better for immersion but not in Multiplayer, aiming with the mouse is easy.

butbutbut! WC and freenlancer aren't the same universe!

you know why they did that mouse thinguy? to have more people buy the game, coz not everybody has a joystick actually. Anyway, it seems after all you'll be able to use a joystick, but in fact it seems the fighter will be kindda on autopilot most of the time ( yeah, even in dogfights :p ). Really, it's not an idea I like, anyway, as I said, I have to try it to know.
If I don't like the game but it helps the genre rise again, well, it's cool, it means other companies will try to make space sims again, that's the whole point for me, even if FL is crap.

On this, we are in total agreement.

Of course, the cynical part of my mind reminds me that if a mouse-controlled sim helps make the genre rise again ALL THE NEW GAMES WILL BE MOUSE DRIVEN.

Excuse me. I think I need to cry. :(

Now wait. Freelancer can't even come close to Freespace. If the volition People are smart enough they would fight for the rights, assemle a team and make the Freespace 3, but noooo THQ doesn't want to let them. I hate THQ. How would it be to have freespace 3 on a console? AARGH NOOOOOO!! Make it stop!! The horror!!

No offense but as soon as I saw "mouse controlled" I voted for FS! I have not played the game, but from my experience with Rainbow 6 I definately am against any game the sorely uses a mouse. As for reviving the genre.. If the game is crap it might inspire more crap.. Think of that.

As for FS3 who is THq and what's up with volition? How about making FS3 more mod friendly and take notice of whats out there for FRED3 in regards to all the awesome stuff people have produced out of devotion to their product?

I loved WC3 (Heart of the tiger)... I had the chance to try the earlier ones (IMHO they sucked)... I own WC4 and was dissapointed that they dumbed down the graphics so I never finished it. The true goal of a game designer should be to continually challenge themselves as to what they have, how they can improve it, and what the public expects... Fail to do this, and you won't sell your product. (Ramble alert)...
Don't think of it as being outnumbered. Think of it as having a wide target selection !
