Um... Yes. Freelancer, if it turns out to be EXACTLY what Digital Anvil says it will be, it will cancel out every single shred of greatness that was the Wing Commander Saga. It would be like Thief 3 being about running around with a big gun shooting steampunk mecha. Its... its just wrong.
Btw, I've heard good reactions from sceptical players about that mouse system, when they got to try it when visiting DA.
... I guess the demo will tell me what to think of it
Space-Sim + Mouse-Control = WORST IDEA EVAR.
[my opinion]
when I go to play a space sim, it is for the immersive experience. I sit down, I put my hands on a stick and a throttle and I shut out the rest of the world. For that time I am a fighter pilot. For that time there is nothing but me, the hull of my (admittedly nonexistent) ship and the depthless void of the inky black. In that place, in that setting, I don't want a mouse to control my ship. I don't want a keyboard to control my ship. I want the complete control of a stick and throttle. I want the sure knowledge of exactly what my ship is doing and to what degree its doing it. A mouse cannot do that. If you want, I'll give a technical explanation as to exactly why.

Yes, the Demo is going to be the true test of the thing. When it comes, if it doesn't have a fully integrated stick-and-throttle control scheme, it had better rock my socks or it had better have a written apology from Chris Roberts. If it turns out to be exactly what DA says it will be, I will not buy it. Its as much of a negative statement as I can possibly make to Chris Roberts.
I know it sounds extreme, but its the only way to look at things in my opinion. Space-sims are my absolute favorite genre of games. I don't know why. Games like Independence War 2 are the Grail to me. I very much dislike the idea of dumbing down piloting to MOUSE controls and turning the game into Diablo-in-space, especially after Chris Roberts promised us, the customers and players, that we would be getting the best thing in space sims ever.
