Re: Pirate Bay going legit
I would download a car if I could.

Why? If you could download a car you could just upload yourself where you needed to go so no car required.
No, internet matter transfer only works on non-living things.

So like reverse terminator tech?

Like the Bulk Matter Transmitter from SMAC.

...and hope the place where you want to go to doesn't have a firewall... :P

OT: Pirating stuff is bad, but so are copy-protect-crap like securom other stuff like that wont let you play a game that you actually paid for, because it doesn't like your DVD drive or the fact that you have a burning software installed.
And that's my main reason for torrenting. Stardock made Sins for under 1 million dollars. They sell copies for 20$. They are perfectly content. Now why does EA have to add Securom, sell titles for 70$ a pop, and try to gyp you out of resale? What can one person possibly do with so much money? Even with 30 million in the bank the interest is going to be 1 million annually, why do you need more than that?

$5 for access to the site will still attract millions of people, and will generate the revenue to pay off the game designers.

Re: Pirate Bay going legit
Come to think of it, why do people seed torrents? It's not like they have anything to gain from it. Given that they're seeding, they already have the game, whether legit or not, and seeding only chews up computer and internet usage. It's in their personal interest not to seed.

Surely internet pirates of all people aren't being altruistic!

How much money does it cost to seed? I've never done it so I don't know what fees are usually involved.

I guess it's a community / codependency thing. Everyone "doing their part" so the pirate machine as a whole keeps running ? lol.

I doubt anyone who is seeding never downloads stuff on their own, so there goes altruism ;) lol.

Well.... I mean... there's still your internet bill. But yeah, it shouldn't cost any more.

I'm just curious when the effort of altruism comes in. It seems to be a fairly simple process.

Re: Pirate Bay going legit
It's not altruism. It's common sense. If nobody seeds, there's no pirating.

Huh. I don't seed. Doesn't seem to make a difference. I guess I'm just lucky.

Well, not really. But I guess I see what you're trying to say.

It's just weird. The internet seems like the only place I've seen groups that require communal work like this thrive. IRL, everyone just gets lazy and the program dies after the founder leaves.

Re: Pirate Bay going legit
Arguably, IRL society requires communal work. People get jobs, pay taxes, raise children properly, etc. Few enough people fail that society continues.

The difference is that most people would die if they decided to not be part of society.

Not very many people are totally self-sufficient.
