Pirate Bay going legit

Quote
According to Hans Pandeya, CEO of Sweden's Global Gaming Factory, "We would like to introduce models which entail that content providers and copyright owners get paid for content that is downloaded via the site."

Pandeya adds that while The Pirate Bay is one of the top 100 most visited sites on the entire internet, it needs to change. "In order to live on, The Pirate Bay requires a new business model, which satisfies the requirements and needs of all parties, content providers, broadband operators, end users, and the judiciary," says the GGF exec. "Content creators and providers need to control their content and get paid for it." What's more, Pandeya adds, file sharers need "faster downloads and better quality".

According to a statement from The Pirate Bay, "If the new owners will screw around with the site, nobody will keep using it. That's the biggest insurance one can have that the site will be run in the way that we all want to."

I applaud this move. It's about time peer-to-peer was seen as truly legitimate, and being  acquired by a legally recognized company is a huge first step.

Boystrous 19 year old temp at work slapped me in the face with an envelope and laughed it off as playful. So I shoved him over a desk and laughed it off as playful. It's on camera so I can plead reasonable force.  Temp is now passive.

Re: Pirate Bay going legit
Whilst it's a good business idea, take away the 'Free' aspect and, as Pirate Bay says, the number of visitors to the site will plummet. The whole reason it is so popular is because of what it is, stop it from being what it is and it will collapse.

Not saying that's a bad or good thing, just a thing.

Except, of course, going legit means it's not The Pirate Bay with its charming, incredibly defiant ownership.

The tough part will be getting the users to actually use it and not just switch to a new free site.

How long before they have another site up with a different name that is basically the old Pirate Bay?

Re: Pirate Bay going legit
There are actually many sites that have been around for years that fill the same role as Pirate Bay. They were just one of the more well-known sites. ;)

You guys ever stop to consider that maybe there are other ways to pay for it besides actually contributing money?  It's entirely possible they pay by putting in commercials, or advertisements, but we don't have to actually put one cent into anyone's pockets.

Re: Pirate Bay going legit
Careful, remember Forum policy, I'll let that stand because this is a thread about a pirate site, but lets not make a habit of identifying the sites involved.

Exactly, that's why I'm letting it stand, but you know as well as I that finding the link from the name is not exactly a chore, so it could be interpreted as a link, it's that which people need to be careful about.

Bah....just typing in "torrent" in google will give you the links to a dozen such sites. Even less of a chore.
So really, the whole thing is silly to me.

If people want to go google stuff off their own bat, that's fine, it's their choice to make, and their responsibility, if it goes wrong, they take the brunt of it, but if people post links in here, then the Admin become in part responsible for it, and I cannot blame them for not wanting to.

RIP, TPB.

By the way, will the name be changed at all, seeing as how it won't be full of pirates anymore?
