Hey just stumbled on this thread. I dont really have anything cannon to add, just an idea about hyperions though. Military and especially airforce do use numeric codes to signify version asigned base etc on airplanes. Maybe the Babylon creators drew from there to make a sort of code for hyperions.
Imaginary example:
for a ship with the numeric code 24/21/15 it could be that
24 is the upgrade version so it's a Mark 2.4 hyperion basically making it a midwinter with 0.4 bits added to it,
21 could be the fleet and battlegroup hence 2nd fleet 1st battlegroup and
15 the number of hyperions in the battlegroup, with the specific being the 15th.
That could explain why all hyperions have the same number on the side, if it's not a ship number but a model version and why they use apparently small numbers for a 10000 ship fleet.
That could in theory also explain, if somebody streches it A LOT, the numbers on the Warlocks. They were made to be C&C vessels so it could be that:
42=42nd fleet or 4rth fleet 2nd battlegroup
24=24th fleet or 2nd fleet 4rth battlegroup
Or something like that that doenst really have to do with what the ship is but where it belongs. That's all creative explanation ofcourse but it did inspire me to make up my own coding system for the missions i'm making, just do add a lil bit of spice to the EA fleet. Reading EA Aurora everytime you lock somebody does get a bit boring imo
