Can't get FSO running well!
So i installed FSO in my computer with the new mediavps and the latest installer (the 3.6.10 final) i followed all the instructions for «real men». What first happened was that i read ATI graphics ussualy had problems and mine, being an ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 did.. so i followed the steps to make it work: updated the drivers and downloaded that .dll there is. Even with this my game keeps being lame! in the main menu animations don't work well... they get all mixed. In the briefing i cant even see the image of the ship i choose and in game everytime i stear at any ship the game runs slow, like prince of persia one!!!!!!!!!! My machine is a AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ with 1.9 GB Ram and with incorporated ATI Radeon Xpress 1250: i know its not the best machine but it shouldn't run as slow as it does!

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Oh and one more thing.. i tried to run the game without a mod or any changes in graphics and the same happens

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Yep, a Radeon 1250 will run FSO just fine. To start fixing this, go here, and download the 3.6.10 Final build and the associated Launcher. Copy those to your FreeSpace directory, and select the debug build in the new Launcher. Run it, then post the debug log (found in the data folder, it's called fs2_open.log) here.

With that card, you will also have to mark the "Disable Setting of Gamma" box in the Launcher's Troubleshooting section, otherwise you will probably see some weird graphical artifacts in-game.

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Thank you for reading the troubleshooting FAQ. It's always nice when people do that, especially if it has also helped them.

Do what E said: the log might reveal something. Also, just for curiosity's sake, could you try to grab a screenshot or two of the main hall animation problems? Just hit PrintScreen and the game will save a screenshot in tga format to \freespace2\screenshots\.

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
And one more thing, the "Installer" you referred to is the game executable, not the installer. Just to clear that up.
Gettin' back to dodgin' lasers.

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Well i disabled setting of gama but still the game keeps going too slow.
And here it is the debug report (i think this is it!).

Code tags are fun when posting big logs. Takes a lot less vertical space that way.

Code: [Select]
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps\MV_Complete.vp' with a checksum of 0x31df7754With integrated graphics solutions, I'd rather use the separate MediaVPs without MV_Advanced.vp.

Code: [Select]
Initializing OpenGL graphics device at 640x480 with 16-bit color...16-bit colours are more prone to problems than 32-bit. Also, the small resolution has most likely little performance boost. You should be able to run 1024x768 at least as well as 640x480.

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Hm i don't understand, in my launcher i have 32-bit colour...
But according to your log, you have 16-bit colours. Do the following:
- right-click your desktop and select "Properties"
- from the window that opens, select the "Settings" tab
- on the right side you should see a section called "Amount of colours" or something like that. Select "All colours (32-bit)".
- click OK

And if you could explain wats using the separate MediaVPs without MV_Advanced.vp please i would be thankfull!
What I mean is that you currently have MV_Complete.vp and MV_Music.vp. MV_Music has higher-quality music tracks and MV_Complete has everything else, including textures and effects meant for high-end gaming computers. They may be too much for your computer. Remove MV_Complete, then go to the MediaVPs release thread and download the following files: MV_Core.vp, MV_Assets.vp and MV_Effects.vp. Place them to \freespace2\mediavps\ .

Yeah, take JeffVader's advice. Your computer probably isn't powerful enough to use everything in MV_complete.

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Does it run any better without the MediaVPs (select No MOD from the Launcher's MOD tab)? And what are your other specs? Or assuming that it is a laptop, what manufacturer and what model?

Also something that I forgot to mention previously: you don't need to have any cd's in your optical drive when playing FSO.

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Well i downloaded the MV_Core and tried the game... it still sucks:( im getting so sad! i thought my machine could handle this.

It most likely can, although as a rule of thumb any integrated graphics device << dedicated graphics processing unit so you shouldn't be expecting it to be able to use all and everything. You will most likely be able to use Core, Assets and Effects in addition to Music. MV_Complete includes high-detail effects and textures for some ships.

Also, did you make sure you are in 32-bit display mode as JeffVader suggested? If the desktop is set to 16-bit colour depth, FS2_Open can't use 32-bit colours and gets all kinds of frakked up.

One more thing to check; you don't have some process hogging all the CPU power? Like anti-virus or some other background activity.

Well... My computer is a AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ with 1.9 GB Ram and with incorporated ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 no laptop! its still running really badly with that mod and doesn't even run with no mod at all, sending me a report error. I tried to run it without cd too but was the same thing

Well, I'm using a Laptop with a Core 2 Duo and a Radeon 1250 myself. While it slows down on some of the more graphics intensive stuff out there, it usually can handle everything FSO throws at it.
Now, about this error: Could you go and delete the atioglxx.dll in your fs2 folder and try again?

Well... My computer is a AMD Athlon 64x2 Dual Core Processor 5200+ with 1.9 GB Ram and with incorporated ATI Radeon Xpress 1250 no laptop!

Who built the computer?

Did you buy it from a shop? If so, what company built it and what type number it is?

The reason it was likely to be a laptop is because desktops with integrated GPU's are less than common amongst people whose computer use consists of gaming and using other 3D applications.

Quote
its still running really badly with that mod

Be more specific. What mod are you referring to?

If you mean the mediaVP's with MV_Core only, say so.

If you mean MediaVP's with MV_Core, MV_Assets, MV_Effects and MV_Music, say so.

Also. Perhaps most importantly (even though Battuta already asked it as well):

Did you or did you not check that your display is set to use 32 bit colour depth?

Quote
and doesn't even run with no mod at all, sending me a report error.

This, I find somewhat interesting. FS2_Open should be capable of using just retail data - it won't win any beauty contest but it does work. Could you send the error report AND the fs2_open.log of this crash if you can repeat it by using No Mod?

Quote
I tried to run it without cd too but was the same thing

CD's are not needed for playing FS2_Open. The only thing you can use them for is the original cutscene movies, and there is an OGG cutscene pack (which includes OGG versions of the cutscenes) that makes the CD's completely unnecessary. As you don't currently have that, it's actually a valid move to use the CD's if you want to see the cutscenes, but reading the video files from hard disk drive is faster than from CD's and results in slightly better times in loading the cutscenes (although with modern computers with good CD transfer speeds it hardly matters) and no noise from CD's spinning madly in the drive.

EDIT: Also, I'm not angry at you although you might get that impression from this post. I've just found that I have a... tendency to be a bit long-winded, so when trying to help I'm consciously trying to keep my points intact and sentences short. Which may result in somewhat clipped tone that might be read as "angry" from between the lines.

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Yes my desktop is 32-bit colour. I tried to delet the .dll and i get the same error but it only ocurs when im about to start a mission!
The mod i refered was the MV_complete. I asked the shopkeeper to build the computer and he told me i could get an external GPU.
The error follows:
AppName: fs2_open_3_6_10.exe

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
Okay, thank you.

The display driver version (ModVer: 6.14.10.6347) is very old, or at least I think it is.

Is there an atioglxx.dll file currently in your FS2_Open directory?

If so, it appears to me that it is not willing to play nice with the rest of your drivers. Could you rename it to atioglxx.DISABLED or something like that and try if the error still happens?

In addition to just trying to start a mission, could you also try if going to F3 "Ship Lab" or Tech Room and selecting some of the ships works or not?

If it crashes, could you deliver the updated fs2_open.log again?

It is likely that with the normal drivers you will not have GLSL support, so if the crash happens with them, you could try disabling the shaders in the Launcher. The option is available in the Troubleshooting feature list. You'll lose some of the maxed out detail (normal maps and some lighting quality) but if it trades off to passable frame rates, it would be acceptable, no?
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

Re: Can't get FSO running well!
first of all just noticed this errorlog:

fs2_open_3_6_10 caused an Access Violation in module atioglxx.dll at 001b:6931f5ee.
Exception handler called in FreeSpace 2 Main Thread.
Error occurred at 7/20/2009 22:48:22.
C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fs2_open_3_6_10.exe, run by Pedro.
2 processor(s), type 586.
1919 MBytes physical memory.
Read from location 0dbfbf90 caused an access violation.

wich is followed by a big amount of numers:). Second i tried to change the dll name and i couldn't enter the game with the same error as before! So i tried to activate some things in troubleshooting and i enabled the Software Mode. with that i can play but i loose all the new effects and that stuff the game is still a bit slow ans i cant even see my bullets!!!! So i tried to disable the shaders but the game just keeps  being slow and i cant even see a round planet now!
