Check this out.  http://216.147.85.26/emm/astroscape/index.htm

It looks like it can make some pretty impressive stuff.  It's not a plugin unfortunately.

Some of the samples are cool-looking - I'll report more when I try it :D

Its a little fustrating to use, the rendering takes forever to draw those stupid little stars.

Since there aren't any tooltips at all - I'll have to read those tutorials... :sigh:

Somewhat pretty  - coulb be a good program if I figured it out...

MAX comes with a starfield video post generator anyway.

Does motion blur but no nebulae...i still have to do that wit volume shaders or noise.

im sure theres some kind of 3D plugin that does starfields for any 3D app...just do a search on google

"starfield +generator +truespace"

or something.

I make them with a multi-level perlin marble/noise material. gives you pretty good results, and is really easy to do and control...

I just generate some fractal noise and play with brightness and contrast till I get a satisfactorily dense/sparse starfield. Bah, a program just for starfields? Bah. ;)

True, I suppose. But I still have a great deal of control over my starfields even without a specialist application to deal with them. Just your standard 2D tools. :)

I found 2D maps a little fiddly..plus they give a very static starfield.

the video-post type dynamic fields or particle systems are just that - more dynamic.  much nicer look for animations and things.

I usually make my starfields using Universe; they turn out fairly realistic IMHO. :)

i do mine in lightwave and nebulas just a fractal noise tex on a sphere and then use a transpaency tex to get rid of the bits i dont want and turns out pretty good at least i think so

I use Universe for starfields and nebulas. It does a pretty good job.
Wash: This landing's gonna get pretty interesting.
Mal: Define "interesting".
Wash: *shrug* "Oh God, oh God, we're all gonna die"?
Mal: This is the captain. We have a little problem with our entry sequence, so we may experience some slight turbulence and then... explode.
