I`ve decided to actually start modding myself after playing about with a copy of Cinema 4D SE (A magazine coverdisk).  

1) Can I use this program for modding? (I`m guessing that I can at least use it for modelling but is it good enough for texturing?)

2) If not is there anything that is free that I can use

3) If not is there anything cheap (I don`t want to waste money if I find out I`m rubbish at it)

4) Are there any good modding guides other than the fighter creation guide?

You should be able to get older TS versions for free.  And no, I don't mean piracy, I seem to recall at least V1 and V2 are available free of charge.

I managed to find TS1 but I couldn`t even get it to install. It crashes as soon as I click on setup.exe

What formats does milkshape save in? (does it have things like DXF, COB, 3dMax formats etc.?)

I ask for something cheap and I get reccomended something costing $3000.

Milkshape doesn`t look too bad but once I`ve made a model with it what do I do next. All the programs I`ve seen for making pofs seem to need .cob files and AFAIK milkshape can't save in that format.  

Untouchable: Which version of TS were you offering?

I am also still looking around for a copy of TS for the heirarchy data creation; anyone know where one of those older versions can be found?

I got my copy of Truespace 1 from here http://www.pcplus.co.uk/article.asp?id=8556

The install is corrupt. I`ve figured out what the problem is. The self extracting zip files put the files in the pcplus\freespace\disk1 etc folders but the install script wants them to be in pcplus\disk1 etc.
 You might have to move the setup file too.

Anyway I`m still interested in any other cheap modellers (I`ve heard a lot of complaints about TS1)

Use Blender (just download the windows version, the sites in some other language). Blender is good for the modeling part. But not for the texturing, you need something that will export in COB.

Blender is a great program..... it's very close to  MAX - at least to how i model with MAX now - and fairly flexible.  The only thing i never figured out was mirroring models, and welding vertices well.

Plus, Max Sterlings' tutorial at VWatch is really good for learning it.

But I suppose if the the didn't get you the crazy Setekh () would you.

Seriously, MS3D is the best, it tops out with interface and ease-of-use, plus, it can save in over 10 formats including .obj, .dxf, .3ds, etc.
Trust me, it's the best out there, and it's price can't be beat.

I`ll admit it doesn`t look bad but once I`ve made ship with it how do I get it into the game without using truespace?
