Strange lines, and strange crashing

Down to the description:
Alright. I decide to try out the Media VP's mod and see how well my computer can handle it. So far, so good... got 3.6.10.exe selected, got my Media VP's selected, click apply, then run. I start up the campaign, skip the training missions, and get going on the first real mission.

First thing I notice are these strange lines going about my screen, but apart from that... it jumps every little bit. I expected it since my graphics card is Intel(R) 82915G/GV/910GL Express Chipset. So here are jumps and framerate issues, ya sure... expected from that thing. Then all of a sudden... it crashes. Again, I figure it has something to do with my chip (also, 504MB ram)

So I go No Mod, and try running Freespace a second time (launcher 5.5e, most recent VPs and .exe). This time round, I expect better framerate, no crashing. However, I still get these strange lines (see image)

And FSOpen still crashes and asks whether or not to send an error report. This is on classic modeling, no enhancements.

I ran debug, and the log is attached

Retail works like a charm, but why wouldn't FSOpen?

OpenGL Vendor     : Intel
  OpenGL Renderer   : Intel 915G
  OpenGL Version    : 1.4.0 - Build 4.14.10.3889

Pretty sure that's your problem right there.  1.4 is bare minimum version of OpenGL for FS2_Open (if not below) and there have been many reports of problems with FS2 open and older Intel graphics chipsets.  You can try finding new drivers.

I didn't realize I was using OpenGL.

Alright, I went to the video option on the launcher screen and switched OpenGL to Direct3D8

I still get these strange lines, and the crash happened again.

Switching to D3D8 does absolutely nothing, as it's no longer enabled in the engine.  Even if you select it in the Launcher, the game's still using OpenGL.

Righto, that makes sense

Alright, are there alternatives with video options?
Next question: Since the Chip I got is embedded into the motherboard, and cannot replace or remove it... would it be possible to mask it with a newer graphics card?

Re: Strange lines, and strange crashing
You should be able to.  Might help if you post the make and model but most all of them allow disabling of the onboard video.

Things go one step further actually - it's been entirely removed from the engine!
I thought I remove the options from the launcher though - will check!
STRONGTEA. Why can't the x86 be sane?

That was kind of what I meant, but I guess that is a better way of phrasing it. :p
