its not really the issue of being too much work, 2 hours of rendered scenes....2 years of rendering.

Depends on the settings used when rendering and what frame size. Proberly arounf 320*200...if you render whit volumetric explosions you are looking 8 hours per frame as killmenow said so you need to find a way to make it look good whit the least amount of rendering time.

explosions are really not a pb, you apply an avi on a plane, you make it show at the right time et voila, it renders as fast as any planar poly, so a few secs per frame :)

With the stuff written for Freeworld you could fill a feature film... a bad one, but still a feature film :D (self-bashing) :p
It came from outer space! What? Dunno, but it's going back on the next flight!

reckon on 6 hours/frame, this is a standard industry-wide rule of thumb, more or less.

I have access to enough hardware to kick it out if i pay some of me friends a few quids here and there - next year ill have access to a Mental Ray renderfarm running on this:

Dual Athlon 1g/1moDDR
3xAthlon 1g/512mo
2xAthlon 1.4g/512mo
1xAthlonXP 1700/512moDDR

plus whatever else i can scrounge.

Anyway...the render problems can be worked around using post-render FX or loads of mucking around.

You could just make a NW campaign for FS.

wEvil: You could spread the rendering. Make each scene into a LW or MAX scene file and give a few scattered scenes each to people to render. That way you could have like 10 or 20 computers doing it and still not give too much of the plot away (granted, no sound but still, you can get a lot from just visuals).

i can get it done quicker on the above network i have access to since MR can also distribute single frames to a network as well as animation sequences.  Its also damn hard to keep track of that many scenes and i'd need some HUGE FTP site.

its easier if poeple just did models & animations and textures and sent em to me to be stitched together...everything gets BIG at the render/compositing stage (prolly >2 Terrabytes)

You could just make a NW campaign for FS.
Which would require far more work then a movie. With a movie you just do up models and a script, with a campaign you have to convert them to FS, still need a script, mission design, balance. It's a nightmare.

Cheaper, less detailed models. But a movie although ambitious would be good.

well..its time i did some new stuff anyway, and since i love making spaceships more than anything else? ;)

you know the kind of stuff I can put out, so.

The plots as such need alot of sorting though...so maybe someone could go through them and pick out the best bits...maybe something like a hugely extended trailer of the best scenes or something?

sounds liek a cool idea i wanted to make a film but you would need permission from volition or who ever owns the rights these days to use the freespace setting wouldn't you? or is node wars something new altogether i never really payed mucha ttension to it

as for rendering you can send scenes to online render farms and for a small fee they will render them for you

but there are some of us that have monstrously powerful pcs and i doubt we could go so far as to so acaul hollywood quality special effects and stuff but we can have afew

no i think it would be fun but models would have to be done high poly

I'd find it immensely amusing if this resulted in people making half-assed spin-offs. If/when you finish you should put all the models up for grabs and see what happens.

also i will happyily devote my dual 1800 to the job of rendering for a while not vast amounts but some

Requirements for a good NW film:
  • Lots of battles
  • Lots of obscure, subtle polt developments
  • Sex, Space-crack and rock'n'roll
  • At least one murder scene
  • Planetary locations
  • Something big exploding

id say there are about five to ten people here capable already of making a scene that looks better than a shot from, say, err..??

well...most TV productions use people like us.  Film...is a little different as they employ very specialised guys to handle shader development etc. but still...

I wouldnt have posted the thread if i thought it was an unacheivable goal.

Character animation I havent cracked but since thats all ill be doing next year ill come out good at it.

In the meantime - PLOT, CONCEPT WORK..define the look of the visuals.  cant start doing 3D work until you have a very good idea of what you want it all to look like.  thats why so much of my stuff sucks in a funny way...most of it is accidental.

should look like the FS ****secenes IMHO, not worse, not better. good quality, not crap, not incredible, quite easy to achieve.. Models are not very high polys ( most of them are beefed up actual low poly models I think, in the FS cutscenes, save for the Apollo in FS1 intro -funny, they have a high poly version of the Medusa, but still used the low poly one for the FS2 intro... odd? )
