The Berretta M9 is the standard side-arm of the United States army.  EVERYONE uses those too.  The M249 is present in nearly every fireteam, it fills the part of the Squad Automatic Weapon, hence its nickname, the SAW.  1 in 4 is large enough to care.  M60 filled that slot before it did.  M203 is found with every grenadier in the military, since its the underslung grenade launcher on M16s and M4s.

No, only most Officers use them, I have yet to TOUCH one after 2.5 years of service. No, despite having five squads there two people in only two squads that have an M249 in each Platoon. Yes, now there's the M240 for that. Sure, if my unit had any M203s to begin with, the only weapon every person actually gets training on is the M16/M4.

Just to clarify, as Zane pointed out, most soldiers don't get to carry sidearms.

What unit are you?

My dad is a career major, S2 for one of the 82nd Airborne Brigades, and the battalion he was attached to used M4s and M249s  I was in error.  The one per team is for the heavy weapons squad of the platoon, my mistake.  However, point still stands that just because you don't use it doesn't mean it isn't important.

And I know what I'm talking about with the M 203.  My dad (before being commissioned) was the grenadier for his squad, and I've lost count of the times he's talked about the grenade jackets/bandoliers for his M203 (another 40 lbs of gear for a jump)

EDIT before the post:  Okay, I concede the sidearms point.  Call of Duty has lied to me once again.

Massive numbers tend not to stand up so well to carpet-bombing. :p If anything, it's those several dozen hostiles hiding in a civilian neighborhood or mountain cave that are the real ***** to deal with.

I'll split this later. For the record, not every organisational structure includes heavy weapons squads. Not every organisation uses the term squads in fact.
Campaigns I've added my distinctiveness to-
- Blue Planet: Battle Captains
-Battle of Neptune
-Between the Ashes 2
-Blue planet: Age of Aquarius
-FOTG?
-Inferno R1
-Ribos: The aftermath / -Retreat from Deneb
-Sol: A History
-TBP EACW teaser
-Earth Brakiri war
-TBP Fortune Hunters (I think?)
-TBP Relic
-Trancsend (Possibly?)
-Uncharted Territory
-Vassagos Dirge
-War Machine
(Others lost to the mists of time and no discernible audit trail)

Let us remember that equipment isn't everything, training and discipline play a large part.

And numbers too.

Numbers fail against superior weapons and training.  See:  the Zulu Wars.  Also, though the engagement is rather infamous, Somalia 1993.

Gulf One was more or less the great feared NATO vs. Warsaw Pact war in miniature. The Iraqi army and especially the Republican Guard were trained to Soviet standards and quite good by them. They all but evaporated in the face of much smaller US and French units.

The conception of vast numbers being able to defeat an army is long dead.

 :blah:

What about me?  I'm going to college to be a gunsmith, so I look up stuff like that for fun.  My dad is a retired, 26 year service Intelligence major for one of the 82nd Airborne Brigades.  I was enough of an army brat to be able to name every aircraft that had ever flown in combat (or military service) up to 1998 by age five.

IIRC there wasn't a major engagement between the RGFC and the British contingent, but the RAF bombed the hell out of a couple of the brigades.

Only the misconception that M9s were standard issue :P  Everything else was from experience talking to my dad.

And a quick check with him confims no major engagements between British forces and the RGFC in the Persian Gulf War.

Experiences differ between location and time, I'm in the 1st ID Division Headquarters and Grenadiers don't exist in our unit, and the Squad Support role is oddly distributed throughout squads.

I don't think a four-man squad should have two sodding M249s. :P

Also differing functions.  Normally, squads are 9-13 people, with two fire teams of 3-5 with a Corporal, all lead by a Sergeant acting as sqaud leader.  One M249 per team is reasonable, since teams are the smallest units that should be operating independently.
