I liked how Phazon was actually something new added to the story.  And the Phazon Suit is ******* badass, no matter what anyone says.  I also liked how it took a sidescrolling platformer and turned it into a very good FPS (platformer)

I love Metroid as a 2D and found fusion quite enjoyable, not tried zero mission yet though. I was bought Prime 3 as a gift a while back, the hunter gunship is quite cool as are the other hunters (mr robot guy was a personal favourite) but 3Dtroid is a different series in my mind and heart. I guess I never got over motherbrains and my baby hatchling dying.

Yeah my little bro has it for the gamecube. I played through a lot of it. I just don't like it. . . The first three in the series were part of my childhood. I'm fond of them, Prime onwards are just too different for me to like them as much.

See, Prime was my first Metroid title, so I didn't have that nostalgic connection.  As it stands, the only other ones I've played have been Prime 2, Hunters, and Fusion, though I do really want to go back and play Super Metroid at some point.

Now see, I loved Prime to death. I bought a Gamecube just to play it and thought it was a fantastic adaptation of Metroid to 3d. However, I have to side with Dekker here; Super will always be the quintessential Metroid.

Metroid Prime 2 gets a lot of hate but there's a lot of fun to be had with it in my opinion. The game also has some spectacular boss fights... along with a spectacularly annoying one. Curse you, boost guardian!

After the third session, I noticed that I was getting migraines within ~20 minutes of booting the disc. And I don't know about you, but migraines create the need in me to regurgitate.

From a gameplay perspective, I still don't care for it.  It went from explorative shooter (Prime), to FPS bonanza (Prime 2).

Yeahno.  In any iteration, Mario is essentially playing out, "Save the princess, save the world."  Samus, however, has a legitimate storyline connecting all of her titles, including a reasonably-detailed origin story.  It's not exactly Pulitzer-worthy, but it's hardly total fluff, either.  Metroid has been traditionally been viewed as the most mature of Nintendo's original properties, and the fact that it takes its setting and story seriously is a big part of that.

A chick bounty-hunter that goes against whole armies in a redicolous looking power armor that morphs in a ball (with her still in it!!), and that has a tendancy to blow up planets and exterminate whole species?

Damn right it ain't a Pulitzer!!!

I did enjoy it for the most part myself.  Perhaps not quite as much as the original Prime, due to the Dark World having the exact same layout as the Light World, but it was still fun.  Though dear lord, that Boost Guardian...

Dude, you're all forgetting one of the best bosses ever: Quadraxis.

The Ridley fights were pretty awesome as well (one of them is in freefall... hard to top that).

Boost Guardian isn't that tough... charged Light Beam blasts? Also the inglets drop health restores. If you pay attention to what you're doing, Boosty is very defeatable.

Yeah, once I learned that you need to make Boosty destroy the four pillars so there are always inglets around I was able to finish that boss without too much trouble. But before that it was quite annoying.

And yes, Quadraxis really is an incredible fight. Once I get to that point again I'm going to duplicate my save so I can play it again whenever I want.
