...I'm trying to come up with a good storyline for my FS1 campaign but since almost everything is used (Rebellions, wars, etc, etc) I was thinking of creating a whole new universe with the Freespace ships so I can come up with a good storyline.

What do you think? Is it a good idea or do you think that many people would want to stay with the good ol' Freespace universe?

Well I think it would work just fine as long as you do it right :) So do an original story, and make it unique

(I'm sure there are other unique and cool ideas for Freespace still though - look at all the different campaigns we're haivng recently :))

No way have all the good campaign ideas been used up! I come up with new ones practically once a week, but I just can't make them all. I have, in my head, about 5 different campaign stgorylines and even more vague ideas, eg.

- Development of beams - Prequel
- Alternate universe reached by freaky knossos (I know this has been discussed before but I got my idea before that. Honest)
- Dangerous amounts of power that large corporations begin to wield over the GTVA after Capella (I have about 3 pages back and front about this one :) )
- Development of Subspace - another prequel, difficult to do at first but eventually...
- Sol make contact with us (I had some ideas about the nature of subspace 6 months or so ago and got the wickedest idea for how this could happen, so while the base storyline isn't exactly original, the rest was rather unique)
- Rediscovery of a hidden HoL fleet by a pirate group who use it to grab for power in regional systems of the GTVA. Sure it's a genericish 'rebellion' storyline but I had a few twists, namely they won and managed to control about 4 or 5 systems for a while. (I'm writing this one as a fanfic at the moment but it could easily become a campaign)

The point I'm trying to make is that it's not campaign ideas that are lacking - it's creativity. People are being lazy. Not that I'm knocking your idea, as it's a fresh one, and fresh ideas are good, and prescisely what I'm trying to promote.

  • Prequels...I DON'T like 'm at all.
  • Those ideas with HoL and the corporations are just rebellions, wich i don't find special. Although the corporations idea is good but i have FS1 so I want to stay in that era.
  • The Knossos... Good idea...Wrong era...

Thanks for the ideas but I still think I should go with the new universe. The only drawback is that i'll have to use the normal FS ships with a mod here and there since I don't want to make a whole new fleet.

New Alien races always a good idea (if done correctly as always), not the sort where u have to join with the shivans to destroy as that would never happen .

I have a few ideas for some nice 4th race ships but i have no moddling programs to make them, nice designs they are too (in my head neway), Terranish looking but a fair bit different, they dont use beams but bombard the enemy with fast firing, high damage plasma blobby stuff(i mean who said every race would make beam tech, surely others woulda have alternatives). Fighters instead of burners use subspace acclerators (or summit) where they create a shlight supspace feild and can travel VERY fast (abit like the intecpter venom made look wise), for te price of going at extreme speed they dont last long and have a long recharge rate ... neways there is alot more cicling in my mind .. i just need the means to make it all :D

Neway if you want use any of this cr*p your more than welcome but i doubt it intrest any of you as it does me :p

I wasn't suggesting you change your idea read the bottom of my post) but pretty much ever since I joined the FS community people have been whinging about the same sort of thing, not so much here but on the VBB often enough. My post wasn't directed at you so much as it was at other people with the opinion, and a distinct lack of creativity. Also, if you want to, you can simplify anything down to a few basic storylines. There aren't really that many. As I recall, there are only about 10 in literature, and Shakespeare wrote 'em all, less in FS because of the limitations of the engine. It's the twists and perspectives that make it interesting.

Actually I tried exactly that - making a new universe with existing ships - then I nedded to edit and add a couple of ships then in standard LAW perfectionist ENFORCER style I scraped every bit of FS2 to do it my self! (im still on my own)
I would say if you can think of a good story and a way round the discrpincys (that killed it for me) then GO FOR IT

P.S. you may wan't to ingnore Black wolf... he seems to know WAY to much! (he might even know your entire story just by the way you type!)(Wait a minuet... stop nicking my ideas!!! - wait thats just parnoid.............*looks over shoulder*)

I think he meant discrepancies. ;)

I am going with a rebellion storyline in TPI but the polish and details should hopefully make up for that. ;)

Actually Shakespeare didn't write anything original.  Every one of his plays is based on some older story.

Well yeah, but he covered practically every storyline in existence. Everything can be compared to one of his plays, hence the point about oversimplification (which it is in my opinion).

Basically, my only gripe was the oversimplification of the first post

Of course everything is used if you want to simplify it that far. I mean, how many stories can be accomodated by the FS2 (or FS1 in this case) engine, where all major events really should happen in mission, ie, in the middle of a space battle. Really, without a rebellion or a war of some sort, you have no enemy, so no battles, so no campaign. An new universe will work, but without a war of some type, I don't think you'll get a campaign. Once again,

Of course, if you can come up with a storyline that does not involve war of some kind, I will gladly applaud your efforts and acknowledge your creativity and versatility as a writer. (Despite the way it may sound, I'm not actually being sarcastic.)

One of my favourite ideas in a low-tech war, like the Starfighter mod - which is AWOL.

The idea being that Earth has found a wormhole to Alpha Centauri... which has become a battleground for the superpowers - a sort of war-by-proxy.

you have fairly low tech, shieldless ships, plus playing about with the physics setting sto get a different feel.

It's just and idea, but the potential storylines are good - encounter with aliens / mysterious artifacts, the war spreading to Sol, etc.

Maybe he is smarter than all of us :D
Anyways - in the constrictions and limits of the FS2 engine I'm sure there is still something to be done...

Thoughts on non-war oriented storylines. Some may not be good for lengthy campaigns.

1. Galaxy police. Need I say more?
2. You are a mercenary/bounty hunter doing various jobs like tracking down criminals/bail jumpers, guarding transports/convoys, and maybe other stuff.
3. Freespace Racing. :)
4. You are the transporter. Trying to get cargo from point A to point B without getting your aft kicked.
5. You are a test pilot. Test out modded ships (flyable and non) in a variety of missions.

That's just off the top of my head. The racing might be the trickiest to do. Would need some major SEXP use, depending on exactly what kind of "racing" you did. Racing might be interesting as an online mission too.
