Hello there me an a friend of mine are in the middle of making a campaign and we need to know whether or not we have permission to sure the following user-made ships

(a lot of these ships didn't have a creator listed on the freespace wiki)

Also I need to know how to put these models into fred in the event that I do receive permission to use them.

Most modders will allow you to use their stuff as long as appropriate credit is given.

To use them you will need to create yourself a mod folder.  In there create a data folder and at least the following folders under it: 

data\models
data\maps
data\missions
data\tables

You place the pof in models, the textures in maps, the table entries (preferable as .tbm files) in tables, and the missions you make in missions.  Crate a shortcut to FRED and add -mod <yourmodfolder> to the command line.

Mod folder goes under whatever game you are working on.  For FS2 would be c:\games\freespace2\<yourmod> or whatever directory is your FS2 directory. 

For the command line you need to right click on the FRED2_Open exe and create a shortcut.  Edit that shortcut and place -mod <yourmod> at the end.

It says "The C:\Games\FreeSpace2\fred2_open_3_6_10.exe-mod specified in the target box is not valid.Make sure the path and file name are correct.

You need to leave a space between fred2_open_3_6_10.exe and the -mod tag.  Otherwise, Windows reads it as all being the name of the file.

correct me if I am wrong, DS_store goes in maps, pof goes in models, but where do dds go to?

No idea what DS_store is.  As for DDS files it depends on what they are for.  They could be textures and belong in maps, they could be effects and need to be in effects, or something else.

You may have too many ships in your ships.tbl.
Try deleting an earlier entry to see if the later one appears.

I've encoutered "DS_store" files a lot from X-Plane downloads. If my understanding is correct, this is basically the Mac OS equivalent of the "thumbs" file created by a Windows machine for whatever reason... perhaps it's just when you create an archive? Well, maybe it's only visible then...

"thumbs" files are "database files," and thus are probably automatically created by your computer to index some given content. Imaginably, when you create a compressed folder, this "indexer" which is normally invisible to you gets shoved into the compressed content. Because when someone else opens the said compressed folder, they will now see the "thumbs" file, as that's not their indexing information. And, because it's not their indexing information, they have no use for it. The first part of the statements are merely my theory on this matter. The second part should be entirely accurate.

Now, because "DS_store" is concievably the same thing as "thumbs," you should have no use for it...

...Throw it away.
