you could do this with 500,000.

to be honest any decent model about 250,000 polies is excessive though.

No way ya can do it with 500000. Look at all those tiny sculls and spikes...

Bump maps or displacement maps would do fine.

If you were working on an extreme closup you'd model only a part of the model and make sure the camera doesnt see the bits you haven't done.

Either way, you could do it with a few intelligent tricks.

But... It's an inverted ship with an arabic city on top, and lots of gargoyles around it! :D

And I couldn't check the movies, didn't work. Which codec are they in?

Looks god-awful ugly, IMO. And not in a good way.

I looked at it again more carefully, and I must agree with that. The thing just makes no sense; as wEvil said, it look like they used a Taj Mahal for the bridge. :p The whole design looks like they took bits from the ancient Persian or Indian castles and used those to make a starship; very, very inconsistent and incongruous. :p

You must not be very familiar with pre-industrial age (Victorian era) mechnical design then. Superfluous decorations used to be the rule, not the exception.

Yes, it used to be like that. However, that is not the case anymore; the trend is actually heading in exactly the opposite direction. (consumer products are designed to look nice, but warships are only about functionality)

A M1A1 could take out a Lemon Russ. Those ships are designed to show the glory of the Emperor of Man. The people who build these ships dont really understand them, as technological advancement is seen as a evil, because they dont want to be ruled by it.

As much as it will offend him, everytime I see wEvil's Polaris, I think of ships like this one. Grand, ornate, extremely detailed. It doesn't matter if its practical or not, if its sane or not. It just plain looks cool.

Whilst I was looking around Starship Modeller today (HUGE Stardestroyer!) I found this, from the same universe. Its an Eldar battle ship. Venom might like it.

Personally, I like the smaller cruiser thingies. Look like something an excessively rich empire might make, but still looks fairly lethal and high-tech. The big one DOES look like crap, though it's so overdecorated that modeling it might actually be easier than doing a less flamboyant ship (Who's really gonna notice if you use the same crappy lathe object 50 times if there are 100 more almost indistinguishable from it packed very close together?)
I'd give a time estimate of two days solid, but I'll be damned if I have that kind of time to waste.

The trend? I'm not criticizing you, but obviously you don't know what you're talking about. Warhammer 40000, as the name says, happens in the 41th century... after what they call the technological middle-age ( lame translation from french, no idea how it's really called in english), full of great inventions, leading humanity to the pinacle of technology. After that, many things happened, and all that knowledge is now lost. You have to understand that the Imperium barely makes up anything, they do searches throughout the whole galaxy to try to find back blueprints from ancient times. This task is done by zealous religious fanatics, and the whole technological stuff is much more a religious concern than a engineerwhatever one. To make it clear, what they built is a patchwork of ancient techs put together by fanatics who worship their emperor to such highs they will turn everything into incons to his glory, from capships to lasers. You want high tech stuff in the 40K universe? Try the Tau ( oh, the fact that there's a faction called Tau in my campaign is a pure and unfortunate coincidence, OTT was began before the tau were anounced :p ), they have techs based on both current techs and japanese mecha designs ).

Oh, Mikhael, this void stalker, lol, it looks much better than the actual figurine for battlefleet gothic :D

Ah. So I suppose that ship is hundreds if not thousands of kilometers long, for solar sails in that proportion to be of any effect... :p

I said the name doesn't come from there. the railguns do, tho. It fitted with the fluff for my Tau, so why not? railguns are cool :D

Styxx: from what I recall, the Eldars don't use solar sails, not anymore at least. This model is based on a very old concept pic actually ( I'd say 15 years old :p ) so...

As the modeller pointed out the 'sails' are too small to be used in the way we normally thing of solar sails. Of course he also said, and I quote:

ELVES IN SPACE

So you know, take it for what its worth, yeah?
