What 2000-2010 should be remembered as.......
The decade from 2000-2010 should be remembered as the decade of hysteria. It's been on massive public hysteria after another. First there was Y2K, then the BS government terror alerts of 2002-2003 (anyone remember the fiasco with duct tape and plastic sheeting?), anti-vaxx nonsense, anti-genetic engineering, LHC going to blow up the world predictions (at least one person actually committed suicide because of this a couple years ago), and now the current hysterics on deck are 2012, the anti-vaxx nonsense (still), and the anti-GM scare mongering.

None of these predictions/fears ever panned out, not one. You'd think we'd learn, but so many of us still haven't. Truely a sad start to the 21st century, let's do better.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

I disagree. People have been hysterical over nonsense like this since the dawn of 'civilization'. Hell, probably before that.

I'd rather this decade be remembered for its anti-consumer policies, or the lack of ethics in journalism. (Although the latter could be argued as being part of the last hundred+ years).

That's true, but not so much in such a short period of time.

2000-2010 isn't a decade, it's 11 years.  :P

The decade starts with 2001.

2001-2010: US proves to world no reason is necessary to walk into a Middle-Eastern country and start shooting people.

No, but really, there's nothing *really* significant that's taken place 2001-2010. I mean, 9/11 is probably the only thing people'll remember of now in about 20-30 years; they probably won't even study the Oil/Second Gulf War in High School anyway.

What about Georgia? It's as significant as your precious Iraq war. Just that there's no costly occupation for all eternity.

On happyer terms, there's a nice image on kuvaton about what happened from 1999-2009. Can't link it now cause I'm on a phone.

The decade of the beginning of significant planetary change?

Everything is beginning to increase or decrease in a bigger than normal way, or so it seems. Maybe I was to young in the previous decade to realise...

Lol, pretty much.

Yeah, but now we have scaremongering being disguised as being the rational course of action. Just look at the ridiculous amount of security thingies that have been done to prevent terrorism. Or filesharing.

Nearly every generation is conceited enough to think that society/culture/the world(tm) is going to end in their lifetime.

We're not so special either.

That wasn't nearly as widespread as this other stuff was. During the run up to Y2K there was a huge run on canned goods and survival gear. Then a few years after that during one of the BS government terror alerts, they had a lot of people across the country convinced that a major chemical or biological terror attack somewhere was imminent. Result? A huge run on duct tape and plastic sheeting (I remember seeing news reports of empty shelves where duct tape used to be).
