Cardinal Spear Error (Probably caused by my own incompetence)
I tried playing Cardinal Spear and got the following error message:

Error: Can't open model file <fighter05.pof>
File: ModelRead.cpp
Line: 1995


Call stack:

I checked to be sure that I selected the right campaign in the launcher, but the error message still appears after I click on "Cardinal Spear" in the campaign room. I know I'm probably doing something completely wrong, but I can't figure out what.  :doubt: Any help on the matter would be greatly appreciated. I'm still fairly new to this community so I'm not sure if this is the right place or manner to report errors/bugs, and if not a little info on that would also be helpful.  :)

I am probably not the best guy for this troubleshooting job, I'm afraid. You may have to wait until The_E or JeffVader show up, or someone with more technical expertise than I.

For now, rest assured you've provided the necessary information to start diagnosing the problem. Hang in there.

Does anybody know which fighter fighter05.pof is?

If my memory serves me right, fighter05 (and others with similar naming scheme) are used in FreeSpace 1; FS2 uses species-specific names (t=terran, v=vasudan, s=shivan). This suggests that FSPort assets are simply not used.

And sure enough, reading at the debug log it seems to me that you aren't actually using FSPort data.

Here's the key part:

What is happening is that your Cardinal Spear mod is located at ..\FreeSpace2\FreeSpace Port\Cardinal Spear\ and it's mod.ini file is set to assume that FSPort is installed at ..\FreeSpace2\fsport\ which doesn't include any files at all, and since Cardinal Spear requires FSPort, the campaign crashes as soon as it tries to use any FSPort asset not included in mediavps or FS2 retail data (the first one in this case being fighter05).

I would suggest that you simply re-name "FreeSpace Port" directory to "fsport" which is the default directory name and all the mod.ini files distributed with FSPort mods will most likely assume that's the place where Port lives.

Another possibility is to edit each and every mod.ini file that mentions "fsport" into "FreeSpace Port", but you can probably see the benefits in using a default directory name. Same holds true for mediavps directory.

Of course, the third option is to forgo the use of MOD feature of the Launcher and instead manage the -mod command line manually into the custom flags in the Features tab of Launcher, which is what I often do simply because I immediately know what mods are activated and in which order, but for non-modding members of community I would recommend simply sticking to default directory names. It's the most painless way.


EDIT: Also, you seem to be missing the patch VP in your 3.6.10 MediaVP set...

It might also be cool to move Cardinal Spear to \freespace2\cardinalspear\ or something. Not that it should matter too much, but having other mods inside a mod folder sort of annoys me.

You are still missing the patch for the MediaVPs (available from the 3.6.10 MediaVPs release thread at the FreeSpace Upgrade Project board. Step 6). Also, assuming that Nebulae.vp contains Lightspeed's nebulae, you don't need it: Lightspeed's nebulae are included in the MediaVPs themselves.

Also, what you just experienced was a warning, not an error. Warnings shouldn't pop up that often with regular builds, so if you still have the debug build selected, switch to the regular build. And in any case, warnings can be skipped by clicking No on the warning window.

Alright, two problems down, (hopefully) one more to go. Thanks all for great help, I think this will be the last issue to deal with.

When I ran Cardinal Spear with the regular build, I got all the way through the briefing with no problem. But when I clicked "Commit," I got the dreaded "We're sorry, Windows has encountered a problem and needs to close" box.

I reactivated the debug build to get a log (which I'm not sure whether you'll need or not, but I figured it wouldn't hurt), and after skipping through several Warnings (Thanks for that clarification, Jeff) I encountered the same problem.

If you need any other info, just tell me what to get and I'll be happy to provide it.

I'm gonna guess it's the damn video card. Try running with -no_glsl added to your command line flags.

Cannot see -no_glsl there.

Go to Troubleshooting list of features. Locate the "Disable GLSL (Shader) support" and click it. Then click Apply for good measure and then Run.
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\mediavps\Nebulae.vp' with a checksum of 0xcd4338d9
Found root pack 'C:\Games\FreeSpace2\3610_Patch.vp' with a checksum of 0x07e72699
You still don't need Nebulae.vp. If you don't want to delete the file outright, test it by moving Nebulae.vp completely outside the \freespace2\ directory.

Also, 3610_Patch.vp is a patch for the MediaVPs -> it belongs in \freespace2\mediavps\ . If it is in \freespace2\ , it will be read too late and the fixes in it will most likely not be used at all.

Well I checked the Troubleshoot feature list and (according to that, anyway) -no_glsl had indeed been activated. I'm not sure why it didn't appear on the command-line options list, but anyway I reselected it and hit Run. I had also moved the Patch VP to its proper directory and deleted the superfluous Nebulae VP. And still...same problem. For good measure I inserted another debug lot into this post, in case one of my recent actions changed anything.

I could be wrong about this, but I seem to recall an issue with Cardinal Spear's planet models.... Don't know how to fix it, aside from not playing it, though.

I don't remember hearing about any other issues (though my memory is horrible) apart from the problems caused by the HUGE textures used on the planet models that would cause some funky tearing issues on weaker graphics card. Though apparently 3.6.10 has some improvements, as I just ran Cardinal Spear quickly and didn't get the tearing with my Mobility Radeon X1600. And I did get them back when Cardinal Spear was released, with the same laptop.

NeoKnight, you may want to download the low-res planet textures for Cardinal Spear. They probably won't fix the issue (or it might), but you'd better have them ready with that GPU anyways.
