Setting in Modes of Play
Hello all,

Apologies if this topic isn't in the right board - was thinking maybe it might belong in the FSO Support board.

Anyways, I've been playing FS with the default keyboard+mouse configuration but as I play at higher difficulties, I find that I die due to a lack of speed that comes with the keyboard+mouse.
I recently tried out playing pure keyboard and I find that the default FS2 config is very cumbersome (slow directional commands on keypad, spaced out keys between afterburner and fire-weapon for instance).
Has anyone playing pure keyboard have a specially modified keyboard setting, perhaps allow me to copy your settings via pilot file?  :nervous:

Re: Setting in Modes of Play
Rebind alt-d to d and you're done. :P
Cumbersome? I'm not sure what you think would be better :I
I might point some fingers of fault at your keyboard perhaps.

i imagine if i ever had to use the keyboard (joystick all the way) i would probably use the old descent-style.  maybe give that a go.

Re: Setting in Modes of Play
If you go keyboard + mouse, you should consider setting the mouse up as a virtual joystick. This means (for example) that when you move the mouse left, you keep turning left until you move the mouse back to center. IMHO it makes flying with a mouse worlds easier. This is also known as "Freelancer-style" mouse control. There are currently two options that I know for doing this:

1. Use the Mouse Script.

2. Use PPJoy (Google it) to fool Windows into thinking your mouse is also a joystick. Basically, you install PPJoy, set up a virtual joystick, then run PPJoyMouse. As long as PPJoyMouse is running, Freespace will treat it like a joystick.

This only applies if I am in an Erinyes or Ares. :P Usually, WASD stands for movements ;)

Ok thanks. I tried out the mouse script but it had completely no effect on the mouse so I tried out PPJoy (old version). It works like a charm, thanks a lot!  :D

Re: Setting in Modes of Play
I've only ever used the keyboard, default settings.  Maybe that's why I always got crucified when I went online.

Re: Setting in Modes of Play
I have changed most of the keyboard bindings around, closer to a setup I use in the Descent games (which has little in common with the defaults there either :p).

If you didn't catch on, I use the default keyboard settings too ...bar one singular keybinding :P

Re: Setting in Modes of Play
My original keyboard layout was based on the one I used for Descent 3. After playing too much Freelancer and realising that a MacBook doesn't have a numpad, I modified my layout even further. As a result, I don't have keys for some commands, such as equalising individual shield quadrants, setting thrust to one- and two-thirds, or slide controls.
