Are today's kids undermedicated and underdiagnosed?
Fascinating read.

Interesting to see a counterpoint to the common wisdom on this topic, especially from someone who set out to write a book about how kids were overmedicated and overdiagnosed.

Not coming down on either side myself.

Re: Are today's kids undermedicated and underdiagnosed?
its like the issue isn't black and white, but
SHADES OF GRAY
some kids are under-medicated and undiagnosed
because of the way US healthcare (doesn't) work, some children whom need medication will go without, while others whom really don't will.

I'm not convinced that any amount of medication or diagnosis is enough to solve the problem.

The problems they talk about in the article. I think a great deal of those are side effects (or symptoms) of the culture we are running.

PBS Frontline: The Medicated Child

Watch that, then let me know if American children are underdiagnosed.
"The reason for this is that the original Fortran got so convoluted and extensive (10's of millions of lines of code) that no-one can actually figure out how it works, there's a massive project going on to decode the original Fortran and write a more modern system, but until then, the UK communication network is actually relying heavily on 35 year old Fortran that nobody understands." - Flipside

Present discussion aside, what do you have against "Frontline"? I find their work to be some of the most professional investigative journalism out there. They were pretty much responsible for getting Terence Garner released from prison.

Well, since we're still waiting for him to present any evidence at all in that other thread I'm questioning his understanding of what can be construed as reliable or credible.

That's a funny coincidence! I was just questioning your understanding of what can be construed as civil.

I'm still rather annoyed with their hopping wholeheartedly on the pedo hunt bandwagon back in the day.

Oh come now Kosh, I gave up on you. You leave too many points unanswered cherrypicking the ones you can fight.

Re: Are today's kids undermedicated and underdiagnosed?
Meh. I think the more psychiatrists understand the way childrens' minds work, the more impetus there is to try and make them 'normal.' At what point do we stop diagnosing personality traits as 'disorders' that need to be medicated?

I believe the article supplies an argument as to exactly when.

Re: Are today's kids undermedicated and underdiagnosed?
insane people kinda tend group themselves off from the rest of society, just because its easier for them (or rather us since im pretty bat**** myself) to be accepted by someone else thats crazy than a normal person. its basic human behavior, birds of a feather essentially. it might be better if we were around normal people, but youd always be the loon of the group which would drive a normal person crazy, for a crazy its just torture.

Re: Are today's kids undermedicated and underdiagnosed?
Actually, I tend to hang out with normal people whenever I can. The "OMG WE'RE SO CRAAAAZY LOLOL" people just piss me off. They're wastes of space. All they do is smoke pot and show up to class drunk and mooch off their parents, and they're not any fun to hang out with.

But yeah, a lot of my friends are kinda wealthy, so at the first sign of trouble (cutting, got caught drinking once, etc) their parents haul them off to a shrink and they come back diagnosed bipolar.

Tura's friends seem to be old enough that they escaped all that, so they're actually fun to hang out with.

Re: Are today's kids undermedicated and underdiagnosed?
nuke's point: crazies tend to cluster.

iamzack's observation: all the people I hang out with are either diagnosed as having a disorder, getting treatment, and dull, or are not identified as a crazy and fun to hang out with.

point of the thread: a lot of people are undiagnosed crazies.

Re: Are today's kids undermedicated and underdiagnosed?
I think her point was that they aren't undermedicated, regardless of the status of diagnosis.
