Ahh it's a fine car... it's not at the build quality level I was expecting on the interior bits but the mechanicals are just fine.  The biggest problems I have with it are a comfort problem (I have a couple of back/nerve issues that cropped up after a soccer injury - not as young as I used to be I guess :)) and a suspension problem.

The suspension is fine... but it's so damn stiff on the XRS model.  I know a sporty ride is supposed to be stiff yes... but over time it starts to drive you nuts.  Yeah it corners well for a Corolla and the 2.4L is torquey and fun but unless the road is very even you feel every imperfection. I've test driven other sporty cars with much smoother rides but with similar handling so it's just the way that Toyota did the setup.  Also the tires are P225/45R17 so they are very low profile.  The more standard Corolla S or LE are 215/55R16. Again..decent handling... very flat cornering but it's not so pleasant on long rides.

So at some point after I'm doing with some additional schooling and have secured a new job I may be looking at a 2012 Focus or something else and trade in the Corolla.  I think I pretty much need to have a power seat adjust so I can get the angles for my long legs right so that my back doesn't have as many issues and I'll make sure I don't buy the super sporty model. If that doesn't work I may have to buy a mid sizer just for the extra leg room.

In the meantime it's a perfectly fine car. Oh except the recalls... but you can't win em all :)

  • It's 5 minutes to midnight.
IceFire, how tall are you? I noted in quite a few small compact cars, I couldn't fit comfortably. Even with the seat sunk to the floor, my head was rubbing the roof. Further, since I have long legs, too, most vehicles I either had my knees hitting the dash OR I found the wheel & gear stick a bit too far away. I'm only 6'1", but I have long legs. It was worse to sit in the back seat; I can't sit straight because my head would be against the roof or the back glass.

Yeah, it's the same with my buddy's Mustang.  The back is really uncomfortable for anyone over 5'10".

Which is why I like my truck..no one under 5'4" can even climb into it anymore :p
Spoon - I stand in awe by your flawless fredding. Truely, never before have I witnessed such magnificant display of beamz.
Axem -  I don't know what I'll do with my life now. Maybe I'll become a Nun, or take up Macrame. But where ever I go... I will remember you!
Axem - Sorry to post again when I said I was leaving for good, but something was nagging me. I don't want to say it in a way that shames the campaign but I think we can all agree it is actually.. incomplete. It is missing... Voice Acting.
Quanto - I for one would love to lend my beautiful singing voice into this wholesome project.
Nuclear1 - I want a duet.
AndrewofDoom - Make it a trio!

Poor student right now, so no car for me expect the old man's (2007 ford freestyle limited)
200hp, about 4000 lbs, by no traditional definition a sporty car.
but its drifts in the snow perfectly...

I'm 5'11" and proportionally I have longer legs.  The only compact I've felt truly comfortable in to date was the VW Golf. It had power adjust and really good seat travel.  Presumably the Germans have enough tall people that they factor in their calculations differently than the Japanese.  The Corolla is not bad... (better than the Civic and Mazda3) but it's still a bit of a pain (literally) sometimes.

It'll do for now. It's a good car... and the XRS model is decently well equipped.

Must be nice living within 5 miles of everything.

Try twenty-five or thirty miles, if he's in shape, has a decent machine, and knows the back roads, if my car-less five years in university is any measure.  (I'm starting to hit the local trails again myself, in the hopes of getting myself back into a condition where I can substitute much of my driving for cycling.)

All I'm saying is even the most hardcore bike riders at my office live within a 5 minute drive.  I however live across a major river about 40 miles away, it's not exactly a choice for me.  Even getting to the nearest Wal-Mart is about out of the question, and I can't exactly bike back with a trunk load of groceries now can I?

All the major things I go to are rather close together, so I usually don't ride very far if I need to go somewhere in town.  When I choose to go for a ride I usually go 16-20 miles, average speed 18 mph.

I don't think most people in Europe realize the distances between places in America.
So as through a glass, and darkly
The age long strife I see
Where I fought in many guises,
Many names, but always me.

There are only 10 types of people in the world , those that understand binary and those that don't.

Hell, even suburbia is sprawled-out enough that you just about need a car to get anywhere.  I wouldn't put my life in the hands of a bike on the roads around here, that's for sure. :p

That's what's so cool about where I live--if you don't trust the drivers (who are pretty tame around here), you can get just about anywhere on the bike path system.  It's really well developed.  Hell, you can even make it to the next town without... scratch that.  With a small sojourn on a back road, you can make it from one town to the next using the bike paths.  And the paths keep on going!  I haven't fully explored them all.  New summer project: see just how far I can make it on the paths.

I only wish we had something like that.  A few spare roads around here have the odd bike lane, but everything else is plain roads or nothing, and many of those are of the hilly, curving, please-don't-hit-me sort.
