A venomous snake that escaped in Germany triggering an extensive three-week hunt has been found dead, leaving its young owner facing a huge bill.

In their efforts to locate the snake, authorities stripped the owner's flat bare, ripping out walls and floorboards and evacuating the building.

The 30cm (12in) monocled cobra was eventually caught on double-sided sticky tape laid by the fire brigade.

The 19-year-old owner now reportedly faces 100,000 euros (£88,000) in costs.

It should be forbidden to keep poisonous snakes in privat homes, these belong either in their natural environment or in a zoo.
It's not the first time this happens, and it wont surely be the last time. At least, no one was bitten this time.
To bad they didn't find the snake earlier, the poor thing had to die because of the stupity and / or the negligence of her owner.

And yeah, he will pay the 100.000€ ( maybe a tad bit less, depending how accommodating the public authorities are - and they are usually not   ).

Nope, it's not.

The bill is for the during the search for the snake destroyed flat, the fact that all the neighbours in that house had to stay several weeks in a hotel, the cost for the deployment of the firebrigade and police, the usage of equipment of said units and a couple more things.
I'm not sure if the fine he'll get for that is already included.

I assume that there were/are rules against having things like poisonous snakes in that residence.  Most apartments have such rules for a reason, since obviously you're living in such close proximity with other people and it's not as if you even own the land.

I really don't want to see people be disallowed from owning dangerous pets (for a given value of dangerous... monocled cobra's can be pretty vicious from what I hear), but if said pets should escape from your residence and pose a threat to the general public, you should really expect to be held accountable for your negligence.

Kind of like if I should want to have a family and kids and also own a gun in the house.  I don't think I should be disallowed from owning the gun, but it's my responsibility to make damn sure that the gun stays locked the **** away.

You would think so, but snakes do not secrete oils like humans to help loosen the bond of the adhesive.  A snake that encounters tape is quite screwed.  At best it might get away with a quarter of the adhered scales missing.. followed by infection.

there are these things called 'aquariums' (i forget the proper name for the same item used for keeping pets that don't live in water)....if their room was big enough they could have bought one large enough to accommodate the snake

They are called terrarium, and depending what kind of snake or other cold-blooded animal you want, cost 500€ upwards (for decent ones - in size and features ).
I'm pretty sure the guy had such a terrarium, but i assume he forget to close the cover, and the snake was able to escape.
