Hey all,

Just wanted to drop by and share a little project I whipped up today. Detailing isn't finished, of course, but I figured I'd get some feedback anyway. ~6 hours into it so far.

I like the the design of the ship and the level of detail is very good .

Just one question about the hole in the middle. Is that a fighterbay or something else?

Great work.  Go on.

Given its Fenris look, is it supposed to be a pre-Great War design (ancestry of the Fenris) or, on the contrary, a post-Capella design (successor of the Fenris) ?

That's a nice ship.

Is it smaller then the Fenris or larger?

If the size of the radar dishes at the bottom can be used for scale, then it appears noticeably larger.  Speaking of the radar dishes, if this is supposed to be a Fenris-derived design, then it deviates by having the dishes on the bottom rather than on the top of the superstructure.  I wonder what he'll put on the top then... if anything.

Thanks for the compliments! To answer some questions, it is based on the Fenris hull, but with some significant changes to accommodate a different role. It is also larger, but not as much as the radar dishes may lead you to believe - the dishes are smaller than their Fenris equivalent.

The hole in the middle - nope, not a fighter bay. It's multi-purpose - it CAN carry cargo, shuttles, etc, but it's main role is to carry and launch a specially designed bomb intended to collapse subspace nodes. Orions are a bit more expensive than a purpose-built bomb after all, and all that was needed after the bomb was developed was a platform to deliver it to it's targets.

Backstory-wise, the reason it was based on the Fenris was not so much anything to do with the Fenris itself, but rather the fact that there was already the infrastructure in place to manufacture them or Leviathans in fairly large quantities. So this was supposed to be constructed with as many repurposed parts as possible, rather than requiring a whole bunch of new R&D, infrastructure, etc, before the ship could be built. Essentially, it was urgent to get it constructed, so anything they could do to reduce the initial development costs and then the price-per-ship was pretty important.

I tend to like anything that follows the Fenris line of thinking.  I find it still one of the better designs.

So is it some kind of unmanned, one-shot Meson Bomb delivering medium, or a crewed ship that just put the bomb in the subspace corridor and then make the run for it ? If unmanned, is it armed or not ?

Because it wouldn't make much sense to call a cruiser an unmanned ship, wouldn it ? But I don't think the GTVA would commission suicide ships with suicide crews either.

It's a crewed ship, yes. And the bomb itself is more than just a hunk of explosives. It's housed in a massive jump-capable missile with a single use engine capable of propelling it about 10km (FreeSpace physics, heh.).

The bomb can sit in a node and just wait for a timer or remote signal to jump as well. So, standard usage of the Wyvern sees it jump in, launch the bomb, and jump out. Once everyone is clear, the bomb is signaled to jump and detonate.

Essentially, it carries the bomb from one system to another, as the thought of an unmanned Meson bomb cruising around on it's own is a bit frightening. Once near the target, the bomb is released on it's own, and the Wyvern heads out.

The Wyvern is also intended as a replacement for the Fenris, and potentially the Leviathan. It features the Levi's four AAAfs, but sacrifices any anti-cap capability, as it has no SGreen. It's also a bit faster than the Leviathan, 20m/s, and around as well armored. Thus, when it isn't hauling around massive warheads, the Wyvern will often be seen in defense or escort roles.

Nice. And the concept of a warship able to carry cargo around is quite inventive too.

I agree. A cruiser that can fit standardized crates could resupply in no time. Pull into port, drop off the old crate, pick up a new one, and off they go. They could even resupply deep in space, picking up crates delivered by freighters.

If there's room in the crate they could swap crew members. If docking is automated then the crew could load into the crate before it docks, and the ship could leave before the new crew exits. It would keep all your warships in active longer, with less down time.

I always thought someone should make a stockier variant of the Fenris mesh to use as the Leviathan. This would be an interesting start.

i can see this being turned into a swis-army-knife type ship with the cargo-pod dock being used as a quick change module to mount different capabilitys (maybe even a sgreen or something similar), short range bording shuttle for customes duty amongst other things.  will it have docking points other than the one attaching the cargo module?  and I like that backstory as well.

I agree, the Leviathan should be slightly different and have a "meaner" appearance.
