What's with all the sinkholes?

Ok, so there was that big sinkhole in Guatamala not to long ago, but now a whole bunch of little ones have showed up in China recently. So what's the deal? Why are they all appearing now?

All the vast empty spaces left by oil drilling are finally caving in? Land of the Lost is happenning?

why you should do geological surveys before building things. you have all kinds of things causing cavities to form in the earth's crust. underground water, caves, former mining activities, giant worms, ect. so if you dont take a good look at the ground youre building on youre just inviting disaster.

Had one a few weeks ago here in Tennessee, USA actually.  Right underneath Interstate 24.  Went undiscovered for a few minutes until an 18-wheeler ran over it. . .luckily the truck was long enough that it didn't go in (...that's what she said).

Probably, if it was it'd be like winning the lottery. It can happen. Still, whats a geologists take on all these sinkholes suddenly appearing all over the world?

The lay explanation seems to be that it's an indicator of an imminent quake. At least three can probably be attributed to a major storm. Other than that, I dunno.
