I made my first mission in FRED! Yey!  Stop laughing at me.  I know you've all been doing it for years but i only got the game a few months ago.  Finally i no longer have to play the same few missions over and over again.

So my first mission was just the shoot-the-mara it tells u to make in the walkthrough, but then i went on to make a nice wee battle with some corvetes against a SD lucifer.  The mission didnt have much point but i managed to get beam cannons to work without that horrible newbie question.

So gimme a few weeks and i might treat you to a few new missions.   Well maybee thats a bit optimistic...

Mara? Which walkthrough are you doing? I did the NTF one. You'll find it by clicking on help in FRED2.

Do that walkthrough and you'll be able to write your own missions. That walkthrough teaches you almost everything!

The Mara battle is there - it's the "QuickStart" part of the FredDocs.

Heh, I remember when I started making my first missions... I planned out this giant epic battle, with all sorts of flight chatter in between, and worked on one mission for almost a month, scripting out this epic moviesque mission. I recorded my own voice for all the flight chatter, and worked really hard in getting the whole mission to work. In the end it was quite cool I guess, a little too short and linear. After that, I decided to quit making missions, and start making toons!

Although you intended that as a joke, it definately is not obvious to many people, judging by questions asked about the editor.  IMO, the walkthrough is extremely good (I'm going through it right now), and I can't imagine anyone needing much more instruction in the operation of FRED2.

From what I've seen so far, that hardest part of making a mission is designing it and creating the voice acting for it; other than that, it's pretty straightforward scripting work and balancing.

Youd think they would tell you to place a ship thats a lot less dangerous for your first time in fred... something less powerful and less of a threat.... something so useless you would not feel intimidated to continue freding... something ... like a Vasudan cruiser!

I actualy rammed a Aten cruiser to it's death whit out killing my self. Don't ask me how i did it, as it only worked once.

Funnily enough the mission i made after that involved an Aten class and a myrmadon armed with Helios torpedoes.  It was easier to kill than the Mara.

Then i moved on to the advanced walkthrough.  I'd got most of the way through making the mission and was on to programming the objectives but an error came up and now that mission won't load.  Oh well, i learnt pretty much everything i need.  Im planning one escorting a cruise ship around a stellar nursery (nebula).
