How come some of the .pof files have turrets on the models and some do not?

Are all of the ships supposed to have turrets that you're looking at? No fighters, for example, have turrets.

So on a non-player ship, like a cruiser or something, you can see the turrets, but on a fighter the weapon particle emits from the model and not a turret?

correct, fighters and bombers have firing points for primaries and secondaries, larger ships (cruisers and up) have turrets that are subobjects of the main model and those fire the missiles and lasers and beams.  Some bombers have turrets too though for defense, these are ai controlled however.

Any idea how i create a sub-object in 3dsmax 4? Tried once with a corvette but it didn't display right.

Whazza sub-object?

Oh, you mean that crap TrueSpace has? HAH!

Actually, I do know what you're talking about, or at least the equivalent. I just like to gloat over the fact that I never use TrueSpace.

Truespace is A1-Supar!

seriously though, TS is the most friendly all around program for modelling i've ever gotten my hands on.  Works very nicely.

[sticks finger down throat]

GAAAAAK!

And that's my impression of attempting to model in TS.

I can't afford Truespace. I am under 18 and I don't get a job until next January.

'S a free program, dude.

And cry me a river. I'm 17 tomorrow, have never held a decent job, my life savings total $600, and I have the best 3D graphics suite in town.

It all boils down to whether you have the guts to take what's there or not.;)

EDIT: wait, that's not true. It's all a matter of being stunningly obvious in one's deviant online moral code, having something to trade, and being whiny.

The demo is free, but TS 4 costs 250 and TS5 costs over 500. I turned 15 a couple weeks ago, and my good grades and initiative in school has granted me a job at NASA. I have to drive there though and i dont have a liscense so i cant start until next year.

Eh?

TS1 is all you need. For a modeler other than that, refer to the Frick the System topic, which is quite dead but still useful...

Where would I find TS 1 at? The website doesn't sell it as far as I can tell.

That it doesn't. 'Cos it's free.

Try... well, try the aforementioned topic. I do believe it's in there. You'll have to use the Search Function from Hell, but if you can find it...

Thanks, now i will be able to texture alot easier. no more damned 3dsmax crap (though it's odd that 3dsmax 4 costs 3500 and truespace costs 500 at most and truespace is better at texturing...)

Although I would agree with that; I find it hard to do anything in TS due to the interface... :p

So use Wings3D for mesh making and save TS1 for submodel hierarchy and texturing. :) Best way, IMHO, to export models in Wings3D is to use .obj or .3ds rather then converting them to cob with something like Lithunwrap. The cob files tend to end up huge in TS1. If you open .obj or .3ds files in TS1 you can have it scale it so it can fit on the screen. Submodels may need to be scaled more in TS1 though since it scales each file differently. (Wish TS1 had a "Scale Uniform" option other then that object properties thing, like Wings3D.)
