Sky Background Issue... but not exactly the same as listed in troubleshooting
I was able to play through the second mission of AoA (the one where you view Post-Lucifer Bombardment Earth for the first time) with absolutely no problems.  Everything looked and played great.

However, When I reached the mission "First Contact" (the first mission after the infamous "Forced Entry") The background is... it's hard to describe.

For starters the skybox textures themselves are almost like they are being viewed through a grey screen door.  They are more whitish-grey than black.  I can make out the shapes (and to a limited degree, colors) of nebula and other celestial bodies but its all washed out and overlayed with this very fine grid pattern.  The grid pattern itself seems to deform ever so slightly as I move and turn like I am viewing it through that fancy wavy glass.

Now after much searching I have found nothing on this issue with this mission.  The closest thing I found was a reference to an issue with the planet in mission2 from the troubleshooting checklist.  Desperate I tried the solution mentioned in it and viola!  Problem solved.  Or so I thought.

Out of curiosity I loaded up the mission simulator and went back to the second mission to see what I was missing out on without the advanced visuals... only to discover that now I *DO* have problems with the planet texture.  ARG!

I had had issues with corruption in the mediavps_3612 (due to using the auto-installer) and had to manually download and reinstall them from the appropriate release thread.  I figured I might be looking at a similar problem here so I deleted both blueplanet and blueplanet2 directories and re-built them from the release threads for AoA DC and WiH.  No change.

FSO 3.6.12 INF SSE2 build with mediavps_3612 including radar iconpack.  I use a Radeon X1950 Pro with latest available drivers on Vista x64.  I have GLSL disabled (another thing that irks me but I refuse to get into an unwinnable battle with Linux over my Saitek x52 Joystick/Throttle just to circumvent a barely noticeable problem with graphics).  All other graphics features enabled (except normal maps obviously).  1280x720 resolution, 32bit color, Trilinear Texture Filter, 4x AF, and 2x AA.  Use Large Textures is checked

Whoa.  That last picture is trippy enough to be actually really cool.

That said, I have no idea how to fix it.

What the...?

Could you post a debug log? Run a -d or -debug version of your 3.6.12 INF SSE2 build, load up the mission in question, then go to FreeSpace 2/data/, get the file called fs2_open.log, and post the content here inside code tags.

Looks like your card doesn't like the texture compression that is used on some of the skyboxes. Please post a debug log.

Based on this, it looks as though the uncompressed, 20482 versions don't work correctly, but 40962 compressed versions seem to work. It could be either a driver corruption, or your GPU's memory just doesn't like the uncompressed textures.

Does the Vishnan nebula work when you are not using Advanced? The basic version is 6 x 20482 @ DXT1, while advanced version is the same resolution but with higher quality, at uncompressed 24-bit colour.

If Herra's solution doesn't work I'm afraid we may not be able to resolve the issue without rendering you a custom skybox to use. (Blasted X-series cards.) Your best bet may simply be to push on.  :(

Acknowledged, pilot.

Here's how you can fix this issue:

1. Download this file: http://www.mediafire.com/?dlj4df66e445h5d

2. create the following directory path: ..\FreeSpace2\blueplanet\data\maps\

3. Extract the six files from the NEBFIX-2010-11-08.7z into this directory.


These are the nebula skybox files from the standard version (non-advanced). When you put them into this directory, they will override the higher quality versions in Advanced, which means you will be able to continue using the Advanced VP.
There are three things that last forever: Abort, Retry, Fail - and the greatest of these is Fail.

UBER!  Thank you!  Seems to be working fine now and, even though I know the Vishnan nebula is a now a lower-quality rendering, the visuals are still spectacular (and so much better than... whatever the hell that was).

Gotta say... posting to message boards for help is something I usually avoid at all costs.  I've been fighting with and researching this issue on my own for over half a day at this point (granted, with only a conceptual understanding of 3d rendering concepts) because I didn't want to deal with message boards.  Almost every time I've done so on various message boards in the past I've been met with rudeness, arrogance, and above all else people who simply don't listen to what I am saying when I explain the problem.

I must say I am very pleasantly surprised with the help I have received here.  I couldn't have expected this kind of... er... "service" from a major development house/publisher.  Perhaps EA could learn a bit from you guys :-D

Any way... I can't say for certain how much longer I will remain interested in FSO and its mods and total conversions but I feel like I should help if I can.  Is there any benefit to any testing under vista 64, win xp 32, or ubuntu 32 (the kernel modules I need for my raid controller wont compile under 64bit) that you think you would benefit from considering my particular video card?

Yes, there is. Please download the attached package, and place its contents in mediavps_3612\data\effects. Then start the game using a recent Nightly build. Please report any observations regarding speed and visual quality, and post an fs2_open.log.

Actually, the renderings are the exact same, the only difference is in how the image is saved, thus resulting in slight quality difference.

We don't have hundreds of thousands of users, so we have the luxury of being able to address problems with a more "hands on" -approach. With the big money game houses, publishers hardly know anything, and getting into contact with the developers themselves is almost impossible for a regular user. They have no choice but to gather error reports and address issues in patches as opposed to individual fixes, whereas we can do individual fixes and when we have enough of them we can release a patch that prevents future users from having those issues (hopefully).

Also, we have such a small team that almost all of us have at least a minor clue about what other team members are working on, and can if not solve the problem, at least nudge along a team member who worked on that exact thing and probably knows how to solve it easiest.

Getting as diverse as possible testing environment is good, but the most important thing is that the campaign testers are committed to testing, testing, and more testing of the missions, and then test more as they change.

Hardware/platform testers would probably be more of use on the Source Code Project than individual mods, and that can be done all the time, even when there are no campaigns in beta testing phase.

Getting a lot of errors during mission load with the new build... none of them seem to directly effect gameplay though.  Was able to play several missions with no visible difference between them and previous play-thrus (new player file).  Errors don't seem to appear with FS2 campaign... haven't tried any mods other than blueplanet yet.  So far I've noticed no graphical differences ether with speed or quality but a quick look at the log seems to indicate glsl is still being disabled.  Will mention if I notice anything.

With what Herra said in mind... couple clarification questions.  I assumed you wanted me to turn glsl back on (which I have done so for the log below).  However, do I need to switch back to the FS2 campaign or does it matter?  And should I be putting this in a different forum?

If need be... feel free to move what needs moving... or I can start a new thread in the appropriate forum.

Re: Sky Background Issue... but not exactly the same as listed in troubleshooting

Oh don't worry, I'm loving it.  Just finished the AoA campaign and wow... that final battle was awesome.  Hot Damn!  The whole thing, from the ideas behind the missions to the overall story... just surpurb.  The only complaint would be that the voice acting was just a tiny bit hammy... but I'll take hammy any day of the week to Microsoft Anna.  And I really appreciated that not every character was an stereotypical soldier/officer with an american accent.

Not to mention... for me problem solving *is* something I enjoy.  I fix computers professionally (trying to build up my own business and am known to break my own computer just to have something to fix).  I once managed to trick Vista into storing its C:\users\ folder on the D: drive.  just a matter of some clever use of the new NTFS's symlink feature and careful file copying from linux.  The idea was so that when I reinstalled Windows every year I wouldn't have to worry about forgetting/hunting down game saves stored in my user folder.  They would be backed up on the partition I *didn't* format.  Of course it completely bombed when I went to install Service Pack 1.

Yeah... I'm a nerd and proud of it.

I tried to install the latest version from amd.com (Catalyst 10.10) but the installer claimed my drivers were up-to-date... which at the time I took to mean support for my card was dropped after Catalyst 9.11...

I'm probably gonna head to bed soon so if I don't respond right away I'll catch up with yah tomorrow afternoon.

The last supported driver for X1k cards is he 10.2 version. Try that one.

Ok 10.2 installed without incident.  I double checked and CCC is showing Catalyst version 10.2.  Unfortunately I still see no noticable changes in game.  Log incoming.
