Renegade Legion Mod - Progress- Image Heavy!
Hello, people!

Lurking behind the scenes since 2007, sometimes changing shape and form was the Renegade Legion mod.

I was contacted about two years ago by starlord and so I took up the duties of modeler/Uvmapper and pretty-much-horrible-texturer for the mod. As far as I know, I'm the only one working on assets, at the moment. Lonely.  :(

Renegade Legions is a beautiful universe and starlord has sketched out a campaign that I would like to play at some point; however, it is beyond the reach of a two-man team. So, we've decided we'd like to create a demo mini-campaign, allowing the player to experience one of the most legendary engagements in the Renegade Legion universe: the engagement between the terran battleship Kraken and the kess'rith (nasty aliens) ship Drashok. It takes place in the early history of the RL universe, at a time when Terrans are still fighting for their freedom and not oppressing everybody else... :p

However, even a 3-5 mission campaign is beyond us. We need to get a fleetpack up, find a scripter to handle some universe-specific issues, like capship shield behavior and so on, and, of course, get a FREDder get the actual missions done.

So, in order to attract some much-needed attention, I'd like to present some of my work:

Our Terran Fleet:

The Defensor-class medium fighter (in game!  :D ). Commissioned 7 years before the Kraken / Drashok engagement, it is being dispatched to most front-line squadrons. An excellent long-range platform, suitable for attack and point-defense roles.

The Brutus-class heavy fighter. It is a long-range, heavily armored sniper, or a medium-range, heavily armored nightmare for wings flying in formation. It is the only heavy fighter in the RL universe to sport two turrets and a four-missile VLS system, for long-range bombardment.

The Ultor-class terran battleship (2.75 km length, 2.5 MTons), of which Kraken is the most renowned one. LODs 0 and 1, with debris.

NOTE: New images of WIP Ultor. Symmetry is still on, but will be turned off at some later point. Old Ultor shown to the side, for comparison.

The Syracuse-class heavy cruiser (2km, 1.63 MTons). Latest addition to the fleetpack. The Syracuse class is an aging design, from the early days of Terran independence. Much of its design is based on KessRith ships, but it set many standards for Terran warships. A powerful ship, plagued by maintenance issues. Best used as a support ship, providing additional firepower for a squadron.

The Ravenna-class destroyer (900 meters, 606 KTons). The undisputed feather-weight champion of the early Terran fleet, it was built as a testbed for battleship electronics, targeting  and energy transfer systems, yet performed so well the Admiralty approved full-scale production. It's expensive, yet fast, maneuverable and quite a heavy-hitter, for its size. It's better than anything of its class the KessRith have.

TheFasces-class installation. A joint civilian and military design, it can be used as a military base, trade hub or industrial installation. Currently Fasces stations are being constructed in most Terran systems, with the construction being subcontracted to civilian enterprises. Base model by Starman01 (he calls it 'Colossus'), hi-polyfied by yours truly. Original thread here)

Our Kess'Rith Fleet:

The Kess'Rith 'Falling Leaf' medium fighter class. They, like any other Kess'Rith fighter, bear only primary, laser-based armaments (Kess'Rith looooove their lasers). They are more sluggish than the Defensor (which has a similar power output), but compensate with heavy armor and firepower. They are designed for close-range dogfights and furballs. Engaging at long range is recommended.

The Kess'Rith battleship Drashok (3km, 2.9 MTons). Since no canon KessRith capship designs exist, this one was designed, and modeled by yours truly, inspired by canon tech data, KessRith fighter designs and some capships that were a joint terran-KessRith design.

Thank you for your attention.

Wow, that looks really nice!

Anyway, with good scripts for the missions, I could probably FRED them for you. If you need, I can make an example mission to show.

And about the beams, that's the actual size of the SRed in the mediavps, much too big.

I recall the Ultor model showcased in a thread a while back, but it's awesome to see it once again.

Also, omg beamz.

Well, we'd appreciate it, but it'd be difficult to FRED a mission when the modpack isn't done yet.  :p We still haven't got a single fighter done, and we'll probably need another capship or two (cruiser-sized) to spice the battlefield up a bit. At this point, creation of assets is the top priority, and that's where we'd need the most help...

We do appreciate you offering though. Really. Thanks.

And yes, I know the SRed is too big. In the end, the Kraken's broadsides will probably shoot beams thinner than the shivan AAA ones.

I'm glad you like the Ultor. It was one of my early models, and it is still WIP, after two years. I don't have time to work on it as much as I'd like.  :(

And yes, RenLeg ships work like old 'Ships of the line': massive broadsides, firing in unison. Imagine 2-3 battleships duking it out, with a couple of supporting ships thrown in. The main concern of fighters is to survive, as much as to cause damage.

It's still true, though: if you avoid the beams, you won't get hit.

I remember talking about how these laser batteries could be done but that was a long time ago. Thought it was dead. Good to see that there are at least two people doing something. Sadly I don't have time to provide anything.

Re: Renegade Legion Mod - Progress- Image Heavy!
Ah so here's the thread! :D

Yes indeed the RL mod is still lurking! I wouldn't say that the time spent here has been lost, as awesome new devellopments have been used lately in the engine which I feel we could put to use:

One is definately the cap ship missile system used in blue planet for instance...

Indeed, the remaining major snag remains the laser battery. Enioch and I have observed something close to what we needed in the wings of dawn MOD: mainly a cluster of small beams (anti fighter sized) firing in unison... however, difficulties remain...

Also, another point remains uneven armor, but that can be addressed later...

enioch: akalabeth at some point had modelled an enmity destroyer and a few fighter designs like the sica... We'll have to see with the timelines, yet I'm sure at some point those models will come appreciated: the enmity is a gem!

In the meanwhile, let's start by the beginning! who in here can recall anything from the renegade legion universe from FASA?

First things first: the story:

http://www.4shared.com/file/FGcG56QT/renegade_story.html

in the archive are a collection of scans from the manual of "the battle for jacob's star" for PC, which will act as the prequel for the MOD (although the kraken engagement is far before all that: during the pre-trajan era)... once this is browsed, I'll follow with ship briefs etc...

Re: Renegade Legion Mod - Progress- Image Heavy!
regarding bays, what we would like to achieve is somewhat like this:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7BGufhMICQQ

at 4:37

perhaps instead of planning a cluster of small beams, it would be possible to alter a beam effect in order for it to look that way?

What's your point of view on this?

given the popularity of RL (even aerotech/aerospace has a higher popularity than this, with a wiki with shiptypes described) I have a feeling that everything which is done here already helps...

It'll be a first for any renleg fan to see an ultor fry some kessrith!

My own modding skills are too underpowered to assist with this kind of project, except for some minor background artwork (planets, etc.). But I can still offer moral support and food for starving people.  :D

Well, the Drashok was UV'd in a couple of weeks, but, unfortunately, has to be re-UV'd. You see, I unwrapped it before I got an answer to my problem and I had to unwrap without the help of symmetry modifiers. Now that the community has figured out the answer to my problem for me, I can (read: must) re-unwrap, without worrying about normal maps.  :D

The Ultor is unwrapped, but, as I said, it has to be re-built around some areas. It looks good from this distance, but it's painfully low-poly up close, compared to the other ships.

The Syracuse model just finished, so I haven't had the chance to unwrap it yet and see hw long it's gonna take me. Best guess? A month.  :doubt:

And the Ravenna is also already unwrapped. It will require some re-doing, but not at the level of the Drashok. The model is much smaller and simpler, as well.

Textures should be easier, if I finish the panel lines. I slapped up some filters in Genetica, that will do the job for me.

Ooh they are beauts, glad to see this is going on still.

Glad you like them ;)

Re: Renegade Legion Mod - Progress- Image Heavy!
Am I the only one who has an absolute distaste for these ships? I mean seriously, I kinda feel that the clashing style between the top, which is admittingly nice, but it's the belly is that really, really, turns me off, which looks like is an atrocious, overly greebled box. I seriously hope you have an in-universe justification as to why some of these look like that, because it's driving me nuts.

I'm probably the only one who thinks this way, seeing as the minimalist inside me is screaming at the sight of these. However, I DO like the Ultor and Revanna, because they keep a consistent style through the entire hull.

Re: Renegade Legion Mod - Progress- Image Heavy!
The contrast between the greebles and the smooth hull is what makes the ships awesome.

The U and R have nice lines but look a little bland in comparison.
