Rio burns and we rejoice
The situation is quite simple, over the last weeks drug dealers in Rio de Janeiro sparked a huge wave of violence throughout the city robbing people and burning cars, etc, unfortunately for them and fortunately for us this seemed to be the last strawn in the government's patience and now we got elements of the brazillian army, air force and marines together with the entire police force in Rio going from place to place rooting out the scum and laying a literal siege to one of the biggest favelas there.

All I can say is about damn time because the city was a freaking warzone, however, a lot of people here dont want the police making any arrests, they want blood.

It's Brazil, as is Sarafan. He's happy, because the government is finally trying to clean up the neighborhood.

I'm going to disregard everything about that that refers to Mexico; we all have brainfarts.  ;)

I'm not going to claim that drugs are bad - I love marijuana.  It's freaking awesome.  However, violent gangs that traffic those drugs are not to be supported, or lumped together with "users".  I know several people who pay rent, etc. with money they get from selling weed.  The difference is the high level of violence associated with drug gangs.  Making money selling drugs =/= violent Rio drug gangs.

This is one of the most idiotic statements I've seen in a long time.

Especially the part about how every city with a Spanish sounding name and involved in drugs MUST be in Mexico.

weed is awesome. of course the worst thing about weed is the people you have to buy it from. still if you legalized weed, there would still be drug cartels pedaling meth, cocaine, heroin and crack, and then youd have the marijuana trade in countries where its still illegal. you still have the sex trade and the black market to deal with.

Pretty much everything Portuguese sounds Spanish except to those who know the difference. :p Hell, the word Rio is the same in both languages.

Complete success. My post managed to be the most quoted and discussed. Woot. Did I earn a cookie?

Come on, it Obviously was sarcastic. I was joking on the two countries standards\levels of morality: "So much higher than them", "honest living", good vs bad, and social acceptance.
Also the "how every city with a Spanish sounding name and involved in drugs MUST be in Mexico"...

Not a brain fart, all I know about Brazil is its name. Cant mistake a city in Mexico(assuming its there) for Brazil in that case.

Obviously.  That's why no one else saw it as such.

Well...if you don't know about something, maybe that's a good cue to not talk about?

And it's not like it's a trick question.  Google or Wikipedia for Rio de Janeiro.  It's pretty obvious it's in Brazil.

Re: Rio burns and we rejoice
I think everything that needs to be said about the location of Rio has been said, can we return to the topic please :)

Personally, I think it's good that action is being taken, same as many posters here, I'm not going to put all people who sell drugs into the same bracket, but when it gets to the point where drug cartels are affecting the social structure of an entire city, action does need to be taken, and when that situation is as it was in Rio, it seems few options beyond armed military intervention are available.

That said, there are social issues to deal with, or the cycle will probably start over in a few years.

Re: Rio burns and we rejoice
policing the favelas is a practical nightmare. roads are narrow or completely non-existant. walkways have steep inclines, buildings placed chaotically. its a snipers paradise and a perfect setting for an ambush. then you got the people who live there who are completely terrorized by the drug cartels, sometimes to the point where they are afraid to do anything to help the police, or worse forced to help the cartels. its not a good situation.

Yes but the rifles were lost not in the capital but in Rio de Janeiro which is the city were all this is happening, the drug dealers had actually acquired the rifles from some corrupt army guys.

Ever played Modern Warfare 2? There's a level set in a favela which is pretty good at giving an idea on how much of nightmare fighting there is.
